Life and Work with Monica Gomez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Gomez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always liked photography, so in high school, I took a photography class and got a “professional camera.” I loved the class but only took photos for school projects. Then, when two of my friends were about to graduate, they asked me if I could take their senior photos and I said yes even though I’ve never done a photoshoot for people before, but I did it just for fun and didn’t charge them of course. After they posted their photos on social media, another girl asked me if I could take her senior photos, then I got a request for a family session and so on. I didn’t even know what I was doing, I remember me being so nervous looking for poses on Pinterest, lol. It all happened without me expecting it was gonna become my job. I did lots of free sessions at the beginning just for fun and to gain experience and now photography is my job.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been easy, as I mentioned before I didn’t have the experience, so I spend lots of nights trying to learn everything I could while I was also going to college full time, so it was like getting two degrees at once. There’s so much to learn about photography you’ll be surprised! When I started to do it as my job, I was still at college, so I had to make time to do shoots, go to school which was a 2hrs commute, do homework and edit photos. But I love it! It was also hard to start my own business and figure out all the legal stuff (taxes, insurance, etc.), but it is something you would want to do right before starting to charge so you’re completely covered.

Please tell us about Mony Photography.
I do portrait photography, in general (maternity, kids, couples, quinceañeras, etc.), but I specialize in seniors and couples. What sets me apart from the others I would say is my personality and customer service. I try to connect with my clients since the first moment they contact me and I make sure to give them an amazing experience. When you have a good relationship with your clients, they will feel comfortable and it will show in the pictures. Also, I try to satisfy all their needs so they are happy with the results.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I was born and raised in Mexico. I moved to the US when I was 12 years old, and it was all new to me, especially the language. Because of this whole transition, I got stronger and more mature since I had to work harder, adapt to a new country and traditions, and learn English. I can also expand my market by being bilingual. So, I think that experience is helping me succeed.
