Monica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Life calls and I follow.
I keep my doors, windows and heart wide open to new experiences. I let it all in. The good, the bad, the love the hurt. Because, in fact, it is one and same. When you open yourself up to life, you open yourself up to a heightened sense of being. You open yourself up to everything you are capable of achieving. When you live with no limits you allow abundance to flow towards you and with it, the magic of pure potentiality.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say it’s been a smooth road and THAT’s only because in my mind I was going to get my license and immediately start my business it didn’t happen that way. I took a leap of faith and quit my job and decided to do mobile because of the clients I worked on while I was in school, I thought they would follow me and would be comfortable with me coming to their homes to do massage, unfortunately, that was not the case. Long story short, I had to go back to the corporate world and write out another plan for myself.
While I was satisfied with the position, I was working I just couldn’t let this license sit so I made a business Facebook page, reached out to some potential clients and then, I received a message from another therapist who had a room that she was going to rent out I met with her looked at the location and before I knew it, I was renting a room to do MASSAGE THERAPY!!!!
Okay, so I can check that off the list ✅ now, I need clients so I was passing out business cards like CRAZY and again contacting old clients to let them know I have a location it’s been a slow process but a steady process. I now have regular clients and new clients I posted an ad on Groupon. The only advice I will give because I’m still learning is to keep grinding and educate people on massage therapy to let them know the benefits and most importantly don’t give up on your dream.
Please tell us about Essential Touch Massage Therapy.
I am very passionate about my work and do my best to ensure the highest quality of care & service to my clients. To ensure high-quality service I am constantly reading about ways to improve the quality of life for people living with chronic pain and disease through massage, specifically those with pre-hypertension or hypertension, as this disease very silently affects 41 percent of black men and 45 percent of black women.
My daily goal is to provide an affordable service that for years has been viewed as a luxury but this is very much so a necessity, especially in times of high stress, which in some cases can lead to depression.
I strive to meet the individual needs of my clients and if for some reason, I am unable to do so, I refer to colleagues.
I am very eager to serve my community and to build a stronger awareness of the importance of self-care.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Taking risks. As a woman sometimes, it seems as if the odds are stacked against us. We tend to get questioned about our choices more than our male counterparts and doubted about potential outcomes.
