Today we’d like to introduce you to Norma Liz Guzman.
Norma, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out working in the Real Estate world in 2012 as a leasing consultant after meeting someone who thought I would be a great fit for the position based on my personality. I started out with no experience whatsoever and quickly learned the business of property management. This is what has led me to become passionate about all aspects of property management! At the beginning of the year, I landed a contract with a group of investors who manage and host short term rentals (Airbnb); this was shortly after I lost my job and was not sure how I would make ends meet. I felt that this was the year I would try something new and take a risk- a chance on me and my ideas. I wanted to explore every option so I decided to invest in several ways to educate myself on business and learn the different ways I could utilize my skills. In May of this year, I helped my mentor host a mastermind for all of his students who took the course on how to launch their Airbnb business. I’ve always had a passion for helping people and I quickly became acquainted with the students. One of those students mentioned he was possibly interested in investing in Dallas so I offered to help him find a property. I was successful in finding one and I knew he would need a cleaner for his Airbnb and not just a regular cleaner but someone who specializes in Airbnb. Meanwhile, I was still working with the company I’m contracted with and my responsibilities and roles increased with them which led me to replace their operations manager. I knew I had to partner up with someone and hire help in order to run the business successfully. I partnered up with my mom who previously owned her own cleaning business and we have been growing ever since! I now get to do what I love by helping homeowners and landlords.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all! I have felt so many highs and lows especially when it comes to social media. Many times people don’t show their support or celebrate with me the way I expected them to but I realized sometimes people just don’t know HOW to show their support. I started out with so many different ideas and I believe while I tried to get clear on my vision and the type of business I wanted to start, I confused my social media audience in the process. I’ve learned to focus on one thing at a time. It sounds cliche but I get it now. It’s so important to have your main “bread and butter” income that is consistent while working on transitioning to Entrepreneurship or business owner full-time. At one point, I was cold-calling leads for a wholesale deal and wasn’t seeing a return but the bills needed to be paid so I quickly learned not to put all my eggs in one basket either. Don’t be afraid to work for “free”! Sometimes you just need to be at the right place at the right time, you never know who you will meet but DON’T force it. Everything will happen the way it should.
Please tell us about Expert Cleaning Solutions.
I am the owner of Expert Cleaning Solutions. We specialize in Airbnb so I consider us the Airbnb experts. I have set up many different Airbnb’s in different states and part of a good setup is the maid closet. One of the major differences in what we do versus a standard cleaning company is that we do not bring our supplies with us which helps us cut down on the turnover time. This means we will ensure to have the home ready for check-in on time and no need to haul supplies back and forth to the home. My team goes above and beyond which is what will improve or maintain the host’s ratings. I like to provide tips on how to host a profitable Airbnb business and I even include a package option for people who would like to start or improve their Airbnb who may not have the time to setup their home for hosting.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Absolutely. My mom showed me what hard work and sacrifice looks like. She raised my twin sister and I on her own for a few years and worked two jobs to provide. Now I know that I can’t make excuses and I have to put in the work and make some necessary sacrifices in order to reach my goals.
