Life and Work with Rosa Alonzo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosa Alonzo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I always knew that I wanted a career where I could help others gain self-confidence. I’m a big believer in energy and if we aren’t happy with what we see in the mirror then that reflects on how we face the day. Mentally, the smallest things matter and have a greater impact on the most important thing in our lives.

After being in the dental field for seven years, I knew I wanted to change fields. My oldest brother was a cosmetologist instructor at the time and told me about the esthetic program they offered at his school. Little would I have known that I was going to fall into a career that I would love and do exceptionally well in. Like they say, “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

This year will be two years since I started this incredible entrepreneurial journey. Each day, I continue to research and stay up to date with the most current technology, services, and skin products on the market. Staying up to date with the newest cutting edge technology is exciting to me because I love learning. I love teaching and educating my clients in any way possible.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in the esthetic field, I have to say it is an extremely competitive one. Things are constantly changing so you have to be ready to be forever evolving. It might look like a fun job to have but to be honest not everyone is good at it. The competition is not always friendly or inviting. The most important thing to remember is that we are all here to learn and grow.

My biggest struggle was not believing in myself sooner! Since the day I started esthetics, I set goals for myself and each year I accomplished them. In my seventh year, things were no longer going as I planned. For me, that was different. I went through many struggles and many obstacles that it felt as if though the universe was pulling me in a different direction.

At first, I kept ignoring the signs because I didn’t feel secure, safe, and I wasn’t ready. But when the universe has aligned things up for you, you have no choice but to listen. That’s when I started working for myself. In these past two years, I have learned so much about myself, my practice, my path and where the universe wants to lead me than I ever did working for anyone else. I wish I would have started sooner.

If you have a dream, a passion, and a gift, then go for it. Not everyone will ever share your same dream, nor your passion so creates your own empire.

Please tell us about Skin Slayer.
I’m a medical aesthetician and I specialize in micro-needling. I got my name “Skin Slayer” from a client in reference to a post-micro-needling treatment. My understanding of the skin’s ability to heal and repair post-micro-needling has allowed me to achieve exceptional results.

As a brand, I am most proud of our core values which are respect, integrity, making a difference, and service. I believe in getting to know my clients individually on a personal level. Skin is much deeper than what we see on the surface. Our skin works as a messenger to let us know that the way it reacts to certain things is a much deeper underlying problem internally. I teach my clients about how important it is to make sure our gut is healthy when it comes to skin. Not only what we apply to our skin topically is important but what we put in our body is just as important. When our skin isn’t looking it’s best and when we tend to suffer from problematic skin, it can really bring down your self-esteem.

I have clients that have been following me for years and have now grown into long-lasting friendships. They believe in my work, my ethic, and they trust me. My price may speak what I’m worth but I understand that not everyone can afford to spend a fabulous amount of money on skincare so I run specials that can make it affordable for anyone. I offer a Microderm Monday every Monday for only $30 for anyone who just needs a deep cleaning and reset for the week.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
God has blessed me with the opportunity to meet many inspiring women. Among some of these fascinating women is Anita Parker. Not only is this a God-fearing woman of color but she started her entrepreneurship at an early age as a single mother. She is an exceptional businesswoman, mom, chef, photographer, hairdresser, make-up artist, and more. I am so proud of her and she inspires me to keep pushing forward and when it gets tough to push even harder!

Jean Boswell is another amongst the women who have inspired me. She always has the best advice for me and has my best interest at heart. It’s rare to find that in people these days. A few years ago, she gave me a book called, “The richest man in Babylon” by George S. Clason. Little did I know at the time just how much that book would forever impact the rest of my life.

I could go on and on about all the women who have brought some kind of inspiration in my life, but I don’t have enough space to list them all.
