Life and Work with Roxanne Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxanne Cruz.

Roxanne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing lashes at a local lash salon in Dallas not knowing where it would take me. I just needed a job to where I was able to use my esthetics license. Shortly after, my passion for lashes grew tremendously. The amount of confidence lashes brings someone gives me so much joy! Within 2 years of working there, I had built a full clientele and then realized they weren’t offering me the proper education and supplies I yearned for. I decided to part ways and join a well-known lash salon in Plano, completely leaving behind my clientele and starting from the ground up all while knowing my lash skills would grow and I would be challenged for the better. I wanted to be volume lash pro! My boss at the moment put me out there and truly challenged me. We all work better under pressure right? I would sit about an hour a day with her either practicing or just simply watching her. Over time, the practice I put into it showed in my work and my clientele starting building up. With all the clientele I built up, I began to realize that I could easily do exactly what I was doing but working completely on my own with no one to call to. I learned so much from being there, I took what I needed to be a great business owner from the salon. While looking for a salon suite to rent location was going to be the biggest factor for me. I started lashing in Dallas, then ended up in Plano, so I knew I had to be centrally located for all my clients. I am now located in North Dallas (near the Galleria) in salon suites which I love and decorated to my liking.

Has it been a smooth road?
At the beginning of my career, I struggled so much. Doing lashes is a complete challenge, it’s not something you can just watch from a YouTube tutorial and get it down in one try. It requires a lot of practice and practice as well as a great mentor. It took me about six months to officially say I was good and had the confidence of knowing all things about lashes. With the lash industry always evolving, it is a constant challenge while learning new techniques. The more practice you put into it, the better you’ll be! My advice for young women and starting their career in lashing is always practice and push yourself. Although the frustration can be real, don’t ever give up.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with My Lash Lingo – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

I believe the quality of my work sets me apart from other lash artists, always providing you with my best. Clients can easily recognize the work their service provider has put out and they truly appreciate that.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I don’t believe there are many. The lash industry is filled with many women who strongly believe in women empowerment. They are constantly sharing their tips and tricks with others as well as uplifting us when in need. I feel as though I have countless mentors in this industry always lending a helping hand.
