Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Almanza.
Sandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Hasta la Raíz back in December when I made a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. I fell in love with the handcrafts and the passion the artisans have towards their job. It was when I realized I had to go back to my roots to start Hasta la Raíz meaning to the root.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road but it hasn’t been a terrible one either. One of my biggest struggles has been getting the packaging right how I want it. I think it’s extremely important for a brand to have good branding from tags, garment bags to thank you letters. And of course, getting my brand’s name out there!
My best advice for any women starting their business is STOP PLANNING and do it! Go to any networking events or any event in your field because, at the end of the day, it’s about who you know.
Please tell us about Hasta la Raíz.
I help a small community in Oaxaca with talented indigenous women who have been hand weaving dresses since they were 10. We are here to support and promote their work. The only job they know is how to make a Huipil and as a brand, we are proud to provide a job for them.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Confidence is key!
