Life and Work with Sara Mack

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Mack.

Sara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was young, I didn’t bake regularly. I have special memories of when I would make donuts with my Granny, biscuits with my Dad or cinnamon rolls with my Mom. And, of course, the occasional box cake. But it wasn’t until I had been married for about four years until I really started to experiment with recipes I had never dreamed of tackling. I had a very basic knowledge of baking and I knew I could follow a recipe. There were many successes and definitely some failures, but I knew it brought me joy. Once I started having children, there were many more occasions to bake cakes, cookies and treats. My first layer cakes were for my children’s birthdays. They didn’t look polished, but they tasted wonderful. I fell in love with the creativity cakes that allowed me to explore. I wanted to try new techniques and flavors but didn’t want to make desserts without a place to bring them. My husband doesn’t have a sweet tooth like me and I knew that if I ended up making a cake, bread or dessert, I would be the one eating all the leftovers. So, after some years of baking here and there, I decided I wanted to start creating for others on a regular basis. I started selling my bakes earlier this year and have truly loved being able to share this happiness with others, I’m very humbled at the support I have gotten while I test out new techniques and challenge myself creatively. I couldn’t be more grateful for the people I have baked for, who allow me to design and be apart of their special moments. I’m also forever thankful to my wonderful husband, children and family who encourage me and help me to feel like I can accomplish anything I dream.

Has it been a smooth road?
I just started my baking business earlier this year and have been fortunate to not have many “struggles” as of yet in this venture. It has taken time and hard work, but I haven’t had any major hurdles. I have created a few other online small businesses in the past with some being successful and others that never went anywhere. My advice to someone who loves creating or has something they want to share with others is to not get caught up with how other people’s businesses are doing. Every small business starts somewhere and starts with someone who is most likely learning along the way. Don’t compare your successes to others’. Everyone’s triumphs look different and even the smallest step forward is special when you’re starting out. I remember ordering my first big batch of cake boxes. To someone else, this may look like nothing, but to me, it was exciting knowing that I have enough orders to fill those boxes. It’s important to notice the journey you are on and recognize when you have successes and be grateful.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sara Mack Cakes – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I love to bake a wide variety of desserts, but cake designing is the avenue of my business that I have really loved expanding. I really enjoy creating cakes that have texture and a variety of techniques mixed in. I like to say that I strive for calculated imperfection with my cakes. I use special techniques and create clean lines, but also have raw and organic textures that appeal to the eye from multiple angles. My deluxe cakes are all handmade using quality ingredients and I take my time to create something my client will love. My favorite moment of creating cakes is when my client sees their cake for the first time. I love seeing the joy on their face and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share that joy with them.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
My advice to a young woman just starting out a career would be to research and continue learning as much as you can about the field you are in. Continue teaching yourself and learning from others. Not only will you gain more knowledge, but you will become better at what you are already good at.
