Today we’d like to introduce you to Shivangi Chauhan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shivangi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a self-taught professional henna artist, both traditional and modern henna (mehndi) design. Very young age, I always loved drawing. My mom inspired me to do henna. I drew henna designs frequently at any chance I got and practiced on my friends and relatives. Soon after, I began receiving recognition for my henna art. Continue henna as a hobby, I graduated with a computer science degree. Despite this, I got the chance to pursue my passion for becoming a henna artist. I have, do and will continue my art with love and passion.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing up in India then transitioning to the new culture and language made it difficult in the beginning since English is my third language. Additionally, as anyone starting new, I was definitely a little nervous. I believe that you should do what you love and love what you do. Despite the struggles, don’t give up and keep going with your heart.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am versatile in the henna designs I do. I am proud to have been able to share my culture through my art and spread the happiness it brings. I’m passionate about what I do and do it from the bottom of my heart which I think is very important.
I believe in quality work.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Expressing my artwork through social media platforms have significantly aided me in spreading my art. I would and still do practice designs on myself and that would also being about questions and conversations about henna. Oftentimes my work spoke for me.
