Life and Work with Stephanie Strobl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Strobl.

Stephanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for photography actually blossomed out of a moment of bridal angst from my sister. Not how you thought this story would begin, huh? Me neither. My sister, who was planning a wedding at the time, was a budget conscious bride and needed some professional photos in order to design her save the dates. I had a “nice camera” and she asked if I could take them for her. She bought me a Groupon, of all things, haha, to a photography class to learn more about the basics of the art and how to navigate my camera. I learned quite a bit and was able to capture some beautiful photos for them. It really wasn’t until I was researching photographers for my own wedding that my eyes were opened to the different styles, lighting, and composition of photography. It was fascinating and beautiful. I upgraded to a DSLR camera and I eventually asked my wedding photographer, Hannah Hagaman, with Cottonwood Road Photography to mentor me on HOW to shoot. She was a wonderful teacher and from there, I was hooked.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say that the learning process has been a relatively smooth one, but the process of putting yourself out there is the unnerving part. My business mainly lives on Instagram; where I am able to immediately share my work and typically receive immediate engagement. I have loved the medium of social media as a means to promote my business. It’s also a great place for inspiration to broaden your creativity. But with that, comes the trap of comparison. I follow some amazingly talented photographers and ended up thinking things like “my family session wasn’t as good as hers” or “If only I had that type of camera or equipment.” Man, what a rabbit hole. It wasn’t until I took a break from the gram to recalibrate my confidence, did my own photography style really start to flourish. Finding your own path and not relying on those who pathed it before you is the real key. You can admire them and be inspired, but your path is your own.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stephanie Strobl Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Lifestyle Photographer. I specialize in everything familial; maternity, newborn, baby milestones, family milestones. Having a baby? Had a baby? Kept a little human alive for a whole year? Haven’t had photos done in five years and you’re thinking you need to freeze frame time? I’m your girl. I am not a “Stepford Wife” posed photographer – I love the raw, in between moments… when you think no one is watching you comfort your little one, sweeping the goldfish crumbs from their face, when you look adoringly at your spouse, so much love and joy amidst the chaos… THOSE moments are gold, captured forever. Moments that while they seem small, are remembered long after you’ve forgotten everything.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I do wish there was more of a focus on the opportunity, rather than the barrier. I think that if you are confident in yourself, TRUST the process, take RISKS and LEARN from them, you can be equipped for any position… no matter what it is.
