Life and Work with Talitha Ledet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talitha Ledet.

Talitha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
First of all, I am a mom to three beautiful daughters and wife to a wonderfully supportive husband of 25 years.  My daughters, husband, parents, sister and brother-in-law, and our dear friends have all been integral in getting me to where I am today.  For more than 15 years, I was an administrator for multi-location private schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth area where I discovered my love for creating a strong community.  This role helped me realize the importance both of building relationships and giving back to the community. Fast forward to where I am today.

For most of my career, I had a desire to create a business of my own that would provide high-quality services, products and experiences.  My background in education provided me with a passion for learning and research – including new concepts, techniques and trends and how to create healthy habits that facilitate longevity – and I absolutely love having the opportunity to share my findings with others.  A couple of years ago, we moved to a mixed-use community with resort-style living where people enjoy the amenities by riding bikes and golf carts and walking. It was while living in this community that the concept of a market was born. Our vision was an atmosphere that creates moments that matter, providing products including last-minute staple items such as coffee and milk, grab-and-go meal items, entertaining options such as wine and cheese trays, and unique local and specialty gift items.  The true gift of being where I am now is having the opportunity to provide these conveniences for others while building relationships and working alongside my family.

Has it been a smooth road?
It would not be as rewarding if I was able to say this journey had been easy with no bumps along the way.  In spite of the challenges, it has been the most rewarding journey of my life. In the past, I tried to start other small businesses, but nothing came to fruition.  In hindsight, I learned that I simply wasn’t dreaming big enough and was not yet on the right path. There is no roadmap to tell you how to change direction and take risks on something you’ve never done before.  Even if there was a roadmap, no amount of research or preparation can protect you from life’s surprises. When those pop up, just navigate the best you can, and keep going with a smile on your face and your dream in focus.  One of the things I have learned, despite setbacks, is that when you are passionate about following your dreams and have a vision of the legacy you want to create, a little self-confidence, a lot of support, and a huge leap of faith can keep you heading in the right direction.

Creating a business beginning with only an idea was something I dreamed about during my career.  The difference between those dreams during that time and where I am today is having taken the leap!  That big, terrifying, exciting leap! My desire to create a wonderful atmosphere, make connections and provide a superior service and product is what motivated me then and now.  The thought of failure is scary, but if you take time to explore things that interest and motivate you and to discover your gifts, you can find the grit and tenacity to accomplish anything.

Owning a family business has provided me with the opportunity to work alongside my daughters and proudly watch them discover their strengths and interests as they interact and build relationships.  And they have seen that, regardless of the path you set out on, it is never too late to change direction, take risks, and follow your dreams. My advice for young women is to use your voice and envision your best life and make sure all the things you spend time on lead you down that path.  In working for us, I tell that to my daughters and encourage them not to be afraid to make mistakes. I also advise them to set boundaries and to make sure to create space for friendships, self-care, mentorship and travel – in other words, to find the right balance in life. Sometimes when we start something new, whether it is owning a small business or working for someone else, we become so driven and focused that we forget to make time for the things in our lives that truly matter – the people we love, including ourselves.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Market at Lakeside and BIG little Market – Water Street – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
BIG little Market and The Market at Lakeside are family owned and operated small neighborhood groceries and wine stores. We offer curated unique local food offerings alongside pantry staples that create conveniences for neighbors looking for quick solutions or a different shopping experience.  We are so proud of the fact that our stores offer excellent customer service and an impressive product selection served with love, and are partners in our communities. In addition, I find it very rewarding to support local brands, many of which are just getting started as businesses, and help them connect with our customers who many not yet be aware of these products.  These businesses are doing some really amazing things. Taking all this into account – the residents, business owners, local suppliers, food/wine experts, and our mentors – what really sets us apart is the people who have been part of our journey and are now part of our family.

Who have you been inspired by?
Wow!  So many women inspire me.  The ones who have inspired me most are my daughters, mom, and sister.  They have helped me understand the importance of legacy, and they all inspire me to always try to be better in all my roles than I was the day before.  Other important women who inspire me are my closest girlfriends. You know the ones I am talking about – the ones that always show up when you need encouragement, your kids need support, a fun night out should be scheduled, or someone to lend an ear.  At those times, they are always there, and they push me to be a better person! Other women who help me find a strength of purpose are those that know what their gifts are and share what they have learned through their own life experiences. I think it is important to feed my brain and make connections so I attend seminars and women’s events (such as HeartStories), view webinars, watch videos, and read books by women – both those who have accomplished great things and those still trying to find their way.  So many amazing ladies are real, honest, and have persevered and accomplished their dreams by ignoring the negative influences that often hold women back from even daring to take the first step toward their dreams. As a woman, I believe we can accomplish great things by supporting and inspiring other women, and I have been very fortunate to be supported and loved by some truly remarkable ladies.
