Life and Work with Taylor Guerra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Guerra.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Any occasion, all events. Musician, Dj, music enthusiast, and producer. My love for music started at a very young age, becoming a drummer at the age of seven by ear. I sat by the drummer at church every Sunday & went home to copy what he did. Between my family and friends throughout my life, I was able to experience ANY and ALL types of music giving me a very very large variety of genres. Watching a video of a young A-Trak winning the DMC World Champion in 1997, I fell in love with the art of Djing. My visits to Guitar Center for all my drum needs I always found myself stopping in the Dj and audio section to mess around with the equipment. Years later, I was able to begin volunteering at a local radio station: KNON 89.3FM. I answered phone lines and helped with events. I was involved constantly with Dj’s I finally decided that I wanted to officially begin to learn the fundamentals and art. A veteran Dj by the name of TA Erik in Dallas TX agreed to help me get a head start under one condition, he would only teach me on turntables. Technics 1200’s to be exact, he paved the way for me and I began my career from there. I had my first radio debut mix in 2014 on Fuego Friday’s with Alex El Niño and Dj Sirius. I was then asked become an on-air mixer on a show with Dj Sirius buy the name of iJamLocal.

Soon after, I started my radio career as a chief operator/production manager for the station then also becoming an on-air host on my own show The Ladies Takeover Show every Wednesday from 12-4 pm. I’ve been blessed, to say the least. Ive had the privilege of working for and with many different artists, venues, clubs, and people in the industry. Performing in front of 5 or 500 people, I give my all and always have a good time. You can now find me in different clubs around the city and an instructor at The Keep Spinning Dj Academy alongside many other talented amazing Dj’s in the city. I’m grateful for the opportunity the incomparable and legendary JayClipp has bestowed to me. Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey I have endured has absolutely not been smooth sailing. I’ve had to overcome many many different obstacles throughout my journey. The biggest one being a woman in the industry, a tattooed, outspoken Latin woman. I don’t look or present myself as many female Dj’s do in this industry. I let my talent speak for myself. The industry has always been a very strong male-dominated industry. Starting out, I was young and a woman trying to pave a way through many different groups in the Dallas Dj industry. I educated myself and taught myself things to help stand out and help push forward when it got rough. It’s still tough sometimes showing up to venues or gigs and men assuming im uneducated about what im doing. All in all, I still have to push and work twice as hard as different people in the industry. My advice to any women trying to start out, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Always push forward and educate yourself, be patient and always take the higher road.

Please tell us about being a DJ/Guerra’s Entertainment.
I like to think of myself as a curator of music, I love the feeling of creating music for people to come out for a short time and forget all their problems by just having a great time! I make music for them to just have a moment in their life where nothing matters but they just dancing and singing at the top of their lungs. I always try to explain to people that there’s no greater feeling than mixing 2 songs together and people just look at you and freak out because they know what’s coming next and can’t help but to go crazy and dance. I specialize in any and all kind of events doesn’t matter what the event is. If it needs music then I’m here to provide that music. I’m most proud of myself for pushing through try doubts of other people, I always show up and just work hard and give it my all and my work ends up speaking for itself.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
PRACTICE. Literally, the best advice I can give! Be good at what you do, speak with your talent and not anything else. Let your talent talk, make sure you are well rounded.
