Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Dozier.
Hi Tyler, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I discovered my love for digital content development in college. Growing up, I had always had an interest in it but never really had the tools, resources, or knowledge to bring my visions to life. Once I declared my major in college and had a few creative classes under my belt, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. There was one particular class that really helped me understand my passions a little more and it was called “Content Development For Digital Media”. This class taught me to make short, effective content. No project was more than two minutes long. We had to do everything from pre-production, production, and post-production. We were tasked to create whatever we were passionate about and sometimes, we had to incorporate a brand or small business. Leading up to graduation, I was able to obtain two dope internships. Starting off with Culture-Hype, a PR/Marketing agency in Dallas, where I learned my foundation in social media management/strategy, creative writing skills by writing copy for social post and blogs, drafting press releases, pitching, event planning/execution and more.
Then I went to Cumulus Media, where I was able to work on more production and build my content development skills by editing videos and producing graphics for the stations. Post Graduation I continue to just build and learn. I landed an internship at one of the most reputable Ad agencies in the country, ‘The Richards Group”. My role there was a Digital/Social Strategist where I worked on several brands such as Keurig – Dr. Pepper, Home Depot, and more continuing to develop my strategy side of my creative toolbox. The last internship I had was at Cinder Block.Tv, a Dallas based video production company that focuses on music. This was my favorite internship because I got to tap into two things that I love in the world of music and produce and edit cool videos. Over the course of this last year, I have been applying everything I learned into all my projects working with other creatives in Dallas to really bring their vision to life. I have done some really cool personal projects that I am proud of, such as my Jordan Shoot – A Michael Jordan ‘The Last Dance’ inspired photoshoot. I also shot a promotional video for a local Fort Worth based online boutique. The name of the company is called LaLuxe. I have also been able to shoot some cool content for local artists – some really dope behind-the-scenes videos and promotional content for their music. I will say that my strength is in video production but I am looking to expand my skill set to doing more illustration and motion graphics over the course of this next year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been easy. Postgrad life finding a full-time job in the creative field is extremely difficult, so I had to make the adult decision to get a full-time job in something I don’t like to pursue what I do like in my downtime. I ended up starting off waiting tables at a local restaurant in my hometown and eventually started working for an insurance agency in their sales division. I am currently still trying to balance both, working my 9-5 by day and doing what I love by night. There is definitely a stigma surrounding 9-5’s upon millennials and Gen Z, but honestly, I think it’s worth it!! I would not be where I am today without my insurance job. With that being said time management has been the biggest challenge. I had made sacrifices to my sleep, eating, and fitness – 3 aspects of my life that I highly value. I would work around the clock just taking on projects that I did not have time for. I am now trying to be more intentional and strategic with the projects I worked on.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart from others would be my diverse background. I have a strategic process that I go through trying to figure out the who, what, when, where, and why in the process where I will actually shoot and edit the project too! I think about the delivery and tap into the analytics as well as focus on the aesthetic and quality of the work. I specialize in video production. I know I am not the best but am actively striving to be better everyday. Telling stories through a camera lens is where I flourish. Adding a little bit of flare with subtle graphics and matching the perfect audio to compliment the visuals. I am in constant search for my style however, I do think I am getting closer and closer with each project I take on. I am known for my social media stories. My platform of choice is Instagram and for all my content, I have to create a story version, whether that be a sneak peek of the content I am about to drop or misdirection (something that will not even be in the final product like bts footage), or just a promotional piece. I am most proud of my Jordan shoot. This was my first major project with my new camera that my brother shot, but I was the creative director and editor. I received a lot of good feedback from it which gave me that push to keep going.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My determination and work ethic. I truly think no one wants this more than me. I really take Kobe Bryant’s ‘Mamba Mentality’ very seriously and apply that to everything I do. Also, I think resilience is very important trait that I possess too! I did not always have this, especially as a kid, but now I realize that successful people are the ones that do not give up. They are the ones that push through the tough times for the brighter days ahead.
