Life & Work with Alan Mercer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Mercer.

Hi Alan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been involved with portraits for over 30 years. I started out as a painter and sketch artist, endorsed by Andy Warhol. In 1997, I decided to concentrate on celebrity photography, and in a move that was pretty cutting edge at the time, launched my website in the hopes that I would be discovered. It worked.

It wasn’t long before Oscar-winning director, James Moll found my website and hired me to photograph his portrait for the DVD The Last Days. From there, I was tapped for a special project to assemble and photograph Steven Spielberg and six other great directors. After arriving in Hollywood in 2001, I was called upon by many of the biggest names in music, film, and television.

I returned to the Dallas Fort Worth area in 2013 and now work with Texas-based musicians,

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Challenges are a natural part of every life journey so yes there have been plenty of challenges and struggles. Every obstacle in life is a lesson that teaches us something profound and valuable. I learned to be grateful for the struggles and challenges.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been a professional portrait photographer since 1997. While I lived in Los Angeles, I photographed many celebrities and creative artists. I photographed several album covers, some book, and magazine covers, and publicity photos. After returning to Texas, I continued by flying out to Los Angeles a few times a year until covid hit. I have not been out there since but look forward to going back in the near future. I am very proud of my work while I was there. I shot an ad for Clairol with Miss Universe 1993, Dayanara Torres that I am proud of. I have my own unique style of shooting and a unique finishing style that sets me apart from many others.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I do recommend a mentor if it works out that you can find someone. I never had that good luck. I like to network the old-fashioned way, by going out and meeting people in person. There is nothing like that.
