Life & Work with Amanda Brown of Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Brown.

Hi Amanda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved dance. My first passion was hip-hop as a young girl. But at 23, I discovered salsa, and it was a turning point, I fell in love with partner dancing. After my first professional class, I was hooked. Soon, I became a teacher with a nonprofit organization called Dancing Classrooms, using dance to teach social and emotional skills through the art of dance to 5th graders in FWISD. Then I met Julie, the owner of DanceMakers at that time, who invited me to join her studio as a teacher. I taught there for 13 years before taking over when she retired. For over four and a half years now, I’ve owned the DanceMakers of Texas and I am so grateful for its success. We teach ballroom, Latin, country, swing, and hip-hop. We offer private lessons, group classes, and parties at the studio, plus we teach at outside events like weddings and downtown at Sundance Square, as well as other venues like Chicken N Pickle. Dance came into my life at a time when I needed it most, during a divorce, and now I’m so grateful to share that healing gift with everyone who walks through my doors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Early on, balancing teaching with financial stability was tough, especially in the beginning. We also had to move from one location to another almost immediately, and it was all hands on deck. My students literally stepped up, using their bare hands to help pull up the wood floors and mirrors and move them into our new space. It took a team of people believing in me, even when others doubted it could work out. But with perseverance, a supportive community, and the power of dance, we kept going, and now I’m so proud of where we are today. I seem to be more behind the desk then on the dance floor but trying to find that balance of the joy of dance & running the studio as my business, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At DanceMakers,We specialize in a variety of styles—ballroom, Latin, country, swing, and hip-hop in private lessons & group classes. I pride myself on creating a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone can thrive—whether it’s their first dance class or they’re preparing for a competition. What I’m most proud of is how we use dance not just as a skill, but as a way to build confidence and meaningful connections. What sets us apart is that we truly meet each student where they are, and we foster a sense of community and empowerment that keeps them coming back. We have already had a few people get married that met at Dancemakers!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I am very proud to be born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. What I love is the small town feel but still in the city. What I like least about our city is that it has grown a lot so we have way more traffic than I would like.
