Life & Work with Amirah Kinion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amirah Kinion.

Hi Amirah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started my freshman year of high school I used to be late to school every day just to do my makeup. I had big block eyebrows and wore lashes and gloss JUST for everyone to talk about me so bad lol. I’m not gonna lie my makeup was horrible but one day I was in my room thinking about it like “dang they lowkey right my makeup is ugly.” I took that criticism and FLEEKED my brows from that day forward. Nobody could tell me nothing. I ended up enrolling into a charter school my junior year of high school; in hopes of graduating early and going to cosmetology school. I graduated a tad bit earlier but I hated cosmetology school. I felt like to be in the beauty industry that’s what I needed to do. Me quitting cosmetology school is what led me to being a Freelance makeup artist. It was very scary at first but it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road for the simple fact that makeup is expensive. So, building a kit wasn’t easy. I’ve had multiple jobs trying to save and start my kit over and over. Makeup is all trial and error. So, for years I felt like I was throwing money down the drain. My Grandma & Parents are my number 1 supporters. They gave me money any chance they could get to help me out. But we all know It’s only so much someone else can do for you. You gotta get it yourself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a self-taught makeup artist. I specialize in enhancing a woman’s natural beauty without changing them completely. I’m known for my Natural Glam looks & keeping the skin glowing and expensive looking. I’m most proud of being a part of the most important days of people’s lives. Weddings, Engagements, Graduations, Baby showers, TV interviews, and Important business achievements. Nothing feels better than being the

reason that client felt beautiful & unstoppable that day. It’s like being the cherry on top. What sets me apart from others is that I wake up every day using the talent God blessed me with to bless others. Every experience with me is unique. I truly believe this is what I was sent on earth to do.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
Being successful is all about risk-taking. I’ve learned this first hand by working alongside hairstylist Jonathan Wright. I met Jonathan through a mutual client. One day he called me asking if I wanted to go to New York & Miami and to pack my bags and meet him at the airport. I was in my head about it at first but I’m so grateful for that trip. It taught me to go for what I want. No matter if the

odds are against you take that risk and show off your talents. That trip I go to do makeup on Ashanti, Jade & Killadamente. All women with major
influence. Jonathan showed me what taking risks and grinding hard for what you want can get you. That
changed my mindset completely and I’ll forever appreciate him for it.
