Life & Work with A’Nease Linnear

Today we’d like to introduce you to A’Nease Linnear.

Hi A’Nease, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started back in 2014 while I was doing track & field at the University of Houston. My coach informed me that because of my practice and weight schedule, the major that I was in would not work and I would need to change it. After researching and talking to my academic advisors, we decided that Integrated Communications would be the best fit for me. The major included public relations, advertising, and corporate communications with a minor in organizational leadership and supervision. Once I started to focus and hone in on the public relations courses, I knew that this was where I needed to be.

Being an athlete, I wanted to find a way to integrate my two passions and help the people around me. After speaking to my athlete friends and seeing how the world views us, I knew I could be their voice and help them put their ideas into words and actions without them getting misconstrued.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been far from a smooth road, but it is all about the journey. I stopped saying things were good or bad along the way and started seeing them as the things that will make me better and make it all worth it in the end,

Since graduating I’ve faced challenges from gaining adequate experience in my field to dealing with finding a job during the pandemic then deciding the start my own freelance business. Despite those challenges, the biggest obstacle I’ve faced thus far has to be people not understanding my worth and having to stand on what I deserve.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am Freelance Public Relations Specialist, that focuses on branding you and your business from ground up. I create the brand/image you want to convey to your target market and then have a marketing specialist come in come up with a plan to “sell” your image/brand to the public.

My most proudest moment to date has to be the Bee’s Believers nonprofit I’ve been working on with one of my athletes where I spearhead all Public Relations and Marketing Campaigns. My athlete gave me full control and trusted me with everything and to see all the strategies and tactics come to fruition during year zero has made me so proud and has taught me to trust myself more.

The biggest thing that sets me apart in my field is being #BlackInPR. To be quite frank, this is white-dominated field, and representation matter in everything. It is hard being black in today’s culture, but yet so easy to misconstrue our words and I want to make sure that message a client wants to convey is done correctly.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
As a Public Relations Specialist, I think we can all agree that our favorite app is Instagram. You have to stay up to date with your client’s target audience and what trends they like and interact with the most.

When it comes to podcast, I would have to say “30 Minutes With The Perry’s” is my favorite. It is a faith-based podcast by Preston Perry and Jackie Hill-Perry that focus on life struggles as a Christian in today’s culture. I try not to let work consume my whole life, so I make sure when I read or listen to podcast that they fulfill another part of me.
