Today we’d like to introduce you to Anees Fatimah.
Hi Anees, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We recently moved from Kansas after spending almost a decade there. It all started with a sweet tooth. It always does! I started baking cakes for my husband, who wanted to try a traditional homemade cake. I distinctly remember that he wanted a specific amount of icing in between all the layers. I had never baked a cake before, so I started researching and experimenting. After a few trials and errors, it became second nature for me. From there, it slowly spread to baking for my friends and at family gatherings. My little ones pitched in as well for a fun activity together.
I always had a creative artsy side, but as usual, life took priority. One day a few friends decided to form a creative group where we would sit and work through exercises from – “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. It gave me the jumpstart needed to invest in my creative side, which led to the foundation of my in-home bakery. I had help from many people who believed that I could do this and provided a great deal of encouragement. I felt like I had an army of loved ones supporting me, starting with my husband, family, and some of my dearest friends spread across the globe. That is one of the reasons why my business is very dear to me. I feel connected to every one of them through it. It brings me great happiness to see how proud they are of me today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Getting my work done while the sun was still out was always hard. I started when my kids were toddlers. I had a pretty hectic schedule during the day, so I ended up making my cakes after they went to bed. By the time I complete my cake, it would be midnight or later. When I was thinking of a name for my business, my husband jokingly suggested that I keep something related to the night or the moon since those are my work hours. That clicked instantly for me and hence the name “Crescent Cakes”.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in designer gourmet cakes comprising floral, fondant, geode, chocolate sails, stencil, and dhol (drum). Most of my cakes are my signature style and customized as per client requests. I take inspiration from art, tradition, nature, and couture. I am always exploring new techniques and trends to create my designs.
Of all the cakes I have done so far, the dhol (drum) cakes hold a special place in my heart. It was the most challenging cake and one that I am proud of being able to accomplish. The “dhol” is a traditional drum used in our culture at weddings and other festive events. This cake has beautiful golden textures and intricate details that I love creating.
In my view, what sets me apart is a specialty icing that I have perfected over the years and the combinations that go with it. My clients love them and keep asking for more, especially those who prefer less sugary buttercream. I love using bridal florals and golden textures on my cakes to give them a distinctive look.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
My first love was always photography. That hobby took a backseat due to other priorities. Since I had to post photos of my cakes online, I was lucky that it gave me a chance to get back to it. Food photography was not an area where I had much expertise. But, I was just happy that I got to spend time behind a camera lens again.
