Today we’d like to introduce you to April Nicole.
Hi April, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been utterly in love with music since I was a little girl – singing to oldies in the car with my mom, going to classic rock concerts with my dad, dressing up to sing and dance in front of the mirror. I was born in California but moved to Wylie, Texas when I was 11. That’s when I joined my first choir, and the rest was history. From there on, I was a choir and theater nerd – taking the lead in high school theater productions, singing classical and jazz music around Dallas, and competing even at state level.
I earned my vocal performance degree in Dallas before running away to Italy for love in 2013. In Italy, I focused primarily on classical music opportunities. It wasn’t until 2019, when I moved to Miami, Florida, that I started writing and sharing my own original music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I lost myself for a while.
When I was younger, I let my own dreams get pushed to the side. I didn’t believe that the idea of being a full-time musician was feasible for me. And I let myself get distracted by other things – by responsibilities, by career moves, by blinding love and toxic manipulation.
If I could go back in time and talk to my 23-year-old self, things would be oh-so-different now. But I don’t waste my energy on regrets. In fact, having lost myself makes me feel so much more grateful for where I am now. I know who I am, and I know what I want. I know what makes me happy. I know what my natural gifts are. And I know now that my gifts can make a difference for other people, too. I’ve seen it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter. I write music inspired mostly by love and existentialism, space and time, and simply feeling good. While I’m fairly new to sharing my original music with the world, I’m learning quickly and loving every moment of the journey. I aim to offer my audiences variety – because, when it comes to genres, there is just too much freedom to simply stay in one lane. My songs vary in style from surf rock and psychedelic indie to Latin jazz and experimental pop vibes with a bit of soul thrown in.
I’m versatile in style and setup. I love to put on big productions with a full band, including brass soloists, backup harmonies, and experimental synthetic sounds, but I also enjoy the intimacy of stripped-down solo sets with just a microphone and guitar.
Regardless, I bring love and authenticity to each performance.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The pandemic reminded me to take my time. To take more time for myself. And for my dearest friends. To not take time for granted. And to laugh. I mean, to laugh so hard that I cry. As frequently as possible.
