Today we’d like to introduce you to Austyn Ni’cole (dj Ninja)
Hi Austyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had a deep love for music, especially instruments. In middle school, I explored a few different ones in band class before settling on woodwinds—those were some of the best years of my life. But when high school came around, I realized that band wasn’t something I wanted to pursue seriously, so I stepped away. Even then, I knew I wasn’t done with music. The closest I got to it during that time? Controlling the aux cord at every chance I got—hahaha!
My parents would joke about me DJing school parties, but I never really entertained the idea. Looking back, I wish I had jumped in sooner! Funny enough, my first real taste of DJing wasn’t through turntables but through a video game—DJ Hero. I wasn’t a huge gamer, but that one stole my heart. I still remember the day my stepdad brought it home—he nearly broke his wrist trying to unbox the disc and controllers! The game itself didn’t teach much about real DJing, but hearing the premade mixes and mashups created by actual DJs and producers was inspiring. If you know, you know—there’s a specific mashup that plays as soon as you start the game. I won’t name the songs, but I told myself back then that one day, I’d be able to mix them exactly as I heard them—just like a note-matching exercise by ear, the way I used to do with my clarinet. That moment planted a seed, and looking back, it was one of the first sparks that led me to where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Whewww! Nothing about this journey has been smooth—especially as a female DJ in a male-dominated industry. Breaking in wasn’t easy. I tiptoed my way in, slowly building my name through word-of-mouth and referrals. There were times when bookings were consistent and times when they were nonexistent. That unpredictability was definitely a challenge.
Another struggle? Content creation. These days, it’s not just about DJing—it’s about staying relevant online, and I’ll be honest, that’s not my strongest suit. But what I do excel at is retention—keeping clients coming back. That’s why private gigs have been my lane. Corporate events, weddings, destination parties, showcases—you name it. And my personal favorite? Throwing my own events. There’s something special about curating an experience exactly the way I envision it. The road hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has pushed me to refine my craft and build something lasting.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I go by DJ Nikita The Ninja, and I’m known as Dallas’s best-kept secret—but not for long! I stay laser-focused and committed to bringing my vision to life, which is why I specialize in private gigs and events. While I love rocking corporate events, weddings, showcases, and destination parties, what I’m most proud of is throwing my own events—curating experiences exactly the way I envision them.
As a Black female DJ in the New Dallas scene, what sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly blend genres like EDM, dubstep, and trap bass—sounds that aren’t always expected from someone like me. I’m definitely not the only one doing it, but my brand is about to hone in on it like never before. Stay tuned—there’s so much more coming!
What’s next?
Touring Festivals is the last thing left on my ‘ Accomplishments ‘list!
