Today we’d like to introduce you to Blaise Younkin.
Blaise, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Somebody Else was formed in late 2021 in the Fort Worth area by childhood best friends Trent Adam and Blaise Younkin. The project grew out of years of shared history and a mutual desire to build something lasting rather than temporary. Owen was brought in after playing in another band at their high school, and Dylan joined through a long-standing connection with Blaise, completing the lineup.
From the start, the focus was on making music that felt emotionally heavy but still physical and immediate live, pulling from emo, post-hardcore, and shoegaze without relying on nostalgia. Early on, we learned that consistency mattered more than quick momentum, spending time tightening our live set, rewriting songs, and playing wherever we could. That process shaped our identity -immersive, high-energy performances paired with songs that hold up over time.
Now, Somebody Else is focused on longevity. We approach the band like a real, long-term project: releasing music intentionally, showing up prepared, and continuing to grow beyond our local scene while staying rooted in Fort Worth and the DIY ethic that shaped us. Everything we’re doing now is about building toward the next chapter, not chasing a single moment.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges for Somebody Else early on was simply being young and figuring things out in real time. For most of us, this was the first serious, long-term creative project we had ever committed to, which meant learning not just how to write and perform better, but how to operate as a band. When we wrote and recorded our debut album in Los Angeles, the entire process was self-funded, and at the time three of us were still in high school. Balancing school, work, travel, and the financial reality of making a record forced us to be disciplined early.
Beyond the logistics, there was also a steep learning curve in understanding the music industry itself – how releases work, how shows get booked, how to present ourselves professionally, and how to make decisions that actually serve the band long-term. Those challenges shaped how we operate now. They pushed us to be intentional, self-sufficient, and realistic about growth, and they set the foundation for how we continue to approach music and everything that comes with it
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Somebody Else specializes in intentional, emotionally driven songwriting within alternative rock, focusing on writing songs that feel expressive and dynamic without relying on nostalgia. We pay close attention to structure, tension, and atmosphere, aiming to create music that feels immersive both on record and in a live setting. For us, songwriting is a craft that’s built carefully over time, not something rushed or disposable.
We’re proud of the consistency it’s taken to get to this point and of every piece of music we’ve released along the way. Each release represents growth for us, both creatively and professionally, and we make a conscious effort to keep evolving rather than staying comfortable. New music reflects where we are at that moment, and we take pride in letting that progression be heard.
What sets us apart is our work ethic and our commitment to treating the band seriously. We show up prepared, we put in the time, and we stay focused on the long term. Stylistically, we’re offering a sound that isn’t commonly represented in the DFW scene, and instead of trying to fit into an existing lane, we’re building our own and letting the work speak for itself.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
We rely mostly on practical tools rather than any single formula. Instagram and Spotify are central for sharing music, staying connected with listeners, and keeping up with what’s happening both locally and outside our scene. Bandcamp has also been important for releasing music in a way that feels direct and artist-driven.
On the organizational side, we use TimeTree to keep schedules aligned, especially around rehearsals, shows, and releases. Having everything in one place helps us stay consistent and prepared. Beyond that, a lot of what’s helped us most has come from learning by doing, paying attention to what works and what doesn’t, and adapting as we go rather than relying heavily on books or podcasts.
