Life & Work with Brenda Munden of Alliance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Munden

Hi Brenda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey is a testament to resilience and faith. Thirteen years ago, I embarked on a transformative health journey, determined to shed unhealthy habits and help others do the same. As a Personal Trainer and Health Coach, I dedicated myself to guiding people toward their healthiest selves. However, in August 2021, my path took an unexpected turn when I discovered a lump on my right side. Despite initial assurances from medical professionals that it was just a fibroid, a biopsy in January 2022 revealed it to be Invasive Mammary Carcinoma with Lobular features.

This diagnosis was shocking, especially given that nothing showed up on my mammogram and the doctors seemed unconcerned. Yet, through divine intervention and the prayers of those around me, my tumor was found to be smaller than initially measured and was ductal rather than the more severe lobular type. After undergoing a double mastectomy, reconstruction, and a revision surgery, I emerged stronger and more determined than ever.

Now, with a renewed sense of purpose, I am completing my Cancer Exercise Certification, ready to inspire and support other women battling breast cancer. My mission is to be a beacon of hope, reminding them that they are not alone and that they can rediscover their strength, no matter what challenges they face.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Not exactly—I’ve had my share of bumps along the way. Battling “Boobie Cooties” (breast cancer) was undeniably scary, and the surgeries were far from fun, but my unwavering faith helped me find peace from the very first call. I knew, deep down, that I’d be okay no matter what happened.

The most challenging part was navigating the confusing world of insurance issues. I was fortunate that God placed incredible people in my path—a wonderful nurse navigator from the radiology team and, by a twist of fate, Dr. Garner, an oncological surgeon who not only helped me sort through the insurance maze but also encouraged me to apply for a state plan specific to Breast and Cervical cancer. I never imagined I’d qualify, but thank the Lord, I did.

Finding a plastic surgeon was another hurdle. All I wanted was to have this “thing” removed, yet I hit a snag when the recommended surgeon had recently stopped taking my insurance. I was overwhelmed with emotion until the nurse stepped in, spoke with the doctor, and reassured me that everything would be taken care of.

And then there was the oncologist—finding one who accepted my insurance and could see me quickly was a struggle. Thankfully, a dear friend working as a nurse connected me with an amazing oncologist right around the corner.

Three years later, I continue to give thanks to the Lord for guiding me through every twist and turn of this journey. I even coined the term “Fight Boobie Cooties” as a reminder of my strength and determination. I hope one day to start a nonprofit to help even more women on their journey if it’s in the Lord’s plan.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Personal Trainer, Health Coach, and Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist, and I’m passionate about helping women feel strong, confident, and in control of their health—especially during and after cancer treatment. Through my business, Fun Size Fitness, I create personalized fitness and wellness programs that meet each client where they are, whether they’re navigating a new phase of life, rebuilding strength post-treatment, or simply striving to feel their best.

What sets me apart is my personal experience. Having gone through my own health transformation and battled breast cancer myself, I understand firsthand the challenges women face—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. I take a compassionate, individualized approach, ensuring that my clients feel supported, empowered, and never alone on their journey. My greatest pride comes from seeing the women I work with regain their strength, confidence, and resilience, proving to themselves that they are capable of so much more than they ever imagined.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck? I would not call it luck at all. I give it all to God. With out him, non of this would be possible.
