Life & Work with Candace “Mahogany” Warren of Dallas, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace “Mahogany” Warren.

Hi Candace “Mahogany”, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Candace “Mahogany TheArtist” Warren is a dynamic musician, vocalist, recording artist, producer, educator, and arts advocate based in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Renowned for her signature blend of jazz and soul, she captivates audiences with high-energy performances, leading her band with commanding presence and artistry on stages across the country.

A musician and producer from the age of 11, Mahogany has dedicated her life to performance, teaching, and creative expression. She began her career in the hip-hop world before transitioning into jazz at age 24, where she found her voice as a writer and performer. Her artistic reach extends far beyond the stage, encompassing dance, vocal arranging, studio production, film, radio, and theater. Known for her creative spontaneity, she continues to surprise and engage audiences through pop-up performances and fresh, evolving musical works.

As the Founder and Director of Jazz BeCuzz Arts Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Mahogany is deeply committed to arts education and cultural enrichment. Through Jazz BeCuzz, she shares over 35 years of musical experience, along with extensive training in dance and digital engineering and production, with students of all ages. A devoted mother, mentor, and advocate, she champions artists across genres—from jazz and hip-hop to rock—while fostering a supportive and inspiring creative community.

Alongside a team of accomplished teaching artists, Mahogany continues to cultivate a vibrant environment where students and supporters alike can explore, learn, and thrive through the transformative power of the arts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. As a full-time musician, I’ve had to explore multiple avenues to create sustainable opportunities to use my talents for a living. While the journey has been deeply fulfilling, balancing the demands of performing, teaching, and continuously learning has been both time-intensive and challenging.

This has at times impacted our ability to maintain consistent financial stability within the organization, as well as consistency in programming and communication. Like many growing arts organizations, one of our biggest challenges has been capacity—we have a strong vision and meaningful work to do, but not always enough hands on deck to execute it at the level we desire.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a performing artist, educator, and producer, and the Founder and Director of Jazz BeCuzz Arts Group. As a vocalist and bandleader, I specialize in jazz and soul, known for high-energy performances that blend musicality with storytelling and real connection with the audience.

Through Jazz BeCuzz, I create arts education programs that focus on building confidence, creativity, and self-expression in young people and the community. I’m most proud of creating a space where professional artists and students can grow together—where the impact of the arts is both seen and felt.

What sets me apart is that I actively live in both worlds. I’m on stage performing while also leading and teaching, so everything I bring to my students is real, current, and experience-driven. My work is rooted in authenticity, and my goal is always to make the arts accessible, empowering, and transformative.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as discovering what you’re truly passionate about and intentionally nurturing it—investing your time, energy, and skill to create a meaningful journey and a lasting impact on both yourself and those you reach.
