Life & Work with Chelsea Shaw of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Shaw.

Hi Chelsea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been fascinated with hair since I was a little girl. My mama or my aunties would do our hair most of the time growing up so we were rarely in an actual salon. When I was around 4 I would start experimenting with shampooing my dolls in the bathroom sink. By 8 I was cutting their hair into bobs (my mama couldn’t understand why she would find my dolls with their hair chopped). By jr high and high school I was doing my own hair as well as my friends and classmates here and there.

I went to Paul Mitchell Arlington for cosmetology school almost immediately after graduating high school in 2013. I attended UNT after where I worked two jobs, went to school full time, and was doing hair out of my apartment. When I came home I worked at a series of different salons for the next few years and finally got into my own space around 2021. I’ve been fully independent for a little over a year now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think one of the biggest challenges can be finding your path and remaining confident in an industry where there are so many other creative and talented people. The beauty industry can be very critical and competitive. There have been a lot of moments where I’ve doubted myself and whether doing hair is really for me, but I think as long as you are a genuine person, you’re passionate, and you remain a student, it becomes a lot harder not to succeed at some level or another.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist specializing in natural hair. Though I’m mostly known for my silk presses, I feel what sets me apart is not only that I focus on keeping the hair healthy or bringing it back to a healthier state, I try to educate my clients on their hair.

I’m most proud of how comfortable and confident I’m able to allow my clients to feel from their first appointment.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I’m very big on the Christmas spirit so anything around that time were always part of my favorite memories growing up.

I loved going over my aunties house Christmas Day for the food and games, the music, movies, decorating the house and tree, baking the cookies with my mama and leaving them out the night before when I was very young. We would also ride around and look at the lights and I’d be in the backseat smiling from ear to ear.
