Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Francis.
Hi Cindy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for art and I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. I remember drawing on walls all the time as a child and always getting in trouble with my parents. I enjoy all forms of art, but my favorite is sketching, particularly portraits. It was my go-to gift for everyone at a point, and I found myself doing so many of them. My dream is to have a successful career in art and that’s where tattooing came along. I bought my first tattoo kit during the peak of Covid in 2020.
My classes were online for the time being and so was my job, so I figured why not? It was the perfect time. I started learning by watching “how to” videos by numerous tattoo artists on YouTube and applied what I already knew about drawing to tattooing. I practiced on oranges for a while before I started tattooing on skin. I had to build up my confidence because, compared to drawing on paper, this was permanent and the whole thought was nerve-racking. I officially started in January 2021, tattooing mostly friends and I created an Instagram page to get more clients and the rest is history.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Success takes a lot of consistency, hard work, and patience. The same applies to being a lucrative tattoo artist. It’s never easy being a beginner in a market where experience is such a big deal and I didn’t expect it to be. The most challenging part of being a new artist is building a good clientele.
Most people would like to go to more experienced artists that have been tattooing for years and have a huge portfolio, so you really have to let your work speak for you and be consistent. My main goal as a new artist is to continue to expand my work and build my portfolio in order to build trust with future and potential clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a fairly new tattoo artist. I specialize in black and grey/realism. I prefer larger, intricate pieces with a lot of detail but I’m also beginning to enjoy simple line work. I’m most proud of my ability to learn so quickly and attempt complicated artwork. I love challenging myself and this is the best way for me to do so.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 years, I plan on opening my own private studio. I’m not sure where life will take me as far as location, but I do have a vision of what I want my studio to look like and I’ve already started working towards accomplishing this long term goal. By this time, I should have a great portfolio with impressive work that will draw more people to my art. I want to be an ever-evolving artist who continues to grow over the years.
