Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Greenberg.
Hi Claire, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am a singer, actor, musician, and performer based in Dallas. I was born and raised here in Dallas and ventured across state lines to get a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre and Vocal Performance at Oklahoma City University!
I have been in love with performing ever since I could remember. Wicked was the first show I ever saw on Broadway and from that moment on I knew I needed to be onstage. I was in plays, musicals, and whatever I could get my hands on growing up. Once I started college, I discovered Opera and never loved it back. I love to tell stories and connect with people through my art. I am passionate about social justice and the power that art has to ignite change. I started to combine these passions by working at Teenage Communication Theater with Planned Parenthood here in Dallas. I was an actor and then a senior leader in high school. I loved being able to use theater as a tool to impact young people and teach them about the issues they were dealing with in real-time.
My next step was falling in love with teaching. This led me to start teaching voice lessons and theater! Teaching began for me at summer camp, the best place ever. I was a theater teacher and helped to create the making musical intensive for our camp! Its main goal was to show young theater lovers that there is so much that goes into making a production. I wanted them to see firsthand how many roles they could fill; actor, writer, musician, director, dancer, stage manager, light designer, etc. This way the kids fell in love with theater from all different lenses by creating their own. I am constantly inspired by watching kids discover their love of the arts.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been some struggles in my path for sure. It is really hard to find yourself as an actor in the industry. Finding where you fit in and learning to stop comparing yourself to others and live as the artist that you are is really tough stuff. I find myself struggling with that still today.
It is always hard to get a rejection from an audition, but it is always a good learning experience. What is meant for you will be. I have been so pleasantly surprised by tons of shows that I would have never guessed I would be in but they ended up changing my life.
Exploring, producing, and directing my own work has also been a challenge in its own way! It is amazing to do a piece of theater I really believe in and create it in a way I want to, but it is hard to manage all of the responsibilities involved in putting on a show. Thankfully, I have a wonderful team of people I get to work with that makes it so much fun.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actor, teacher, and director! I am most known for my acting in DFW. I have been in many productions all over town such as Firehouse Theater, WaterTower Theater, Lyric Stage, and Dallas Theater Center! I love being on stage and singing with all of my heart. I am most proud of my performance in Trouble in Mind at Dallas Theater Center. It was truly one of the best experiences I have had being on stage and that is a huge thanks to that amazing cast and director. I am also really proud of the work I have done as a swing (understudying multiple roles) in DFW. I have been a swing in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder at WaterTower Theater and in A Christmas Carol at Dallas Theater Center. It was one of the most challenging things I have ever done, learning all of those parts and going on for them, but it was some of the most fun I have had on stage. I think what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail, my training, and my passion for the work. Being an actor is hard work, but in order to really be able to make a living as a performer you have to be passionate about it. I am so excited about my upcoming project. I am producing and co-directing a production of Spring Awakening with a focus on sex education and mental health awareness!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would not be here without every single teacher and mentor I have had along the way. My biggest supporter has always been Cantor Richard Cohn who was one of the first people who ever really believed in me and encouraged me to keep singing at a very young age. My voice teacher in college, Dr. Autumn West changed my voice and gave me the tools to sing and tell stories with my voice. She is a mentor and a fierce cheerleader for me still today. My parents, brother, and grandparents have been nothing but loving and supportive of me as I have forged this path as a performer. Not all actors can say that their parents do whatever they can to be at every single performance they have big or small. A mentor and a best friend of mine, Julianne Shwartz, gave me the opportunity and showed me how to be a teacher in the arts as well as how to fight for my space in this world as an artist. Dr. Jake Johnson, one of my professors and voice coaches in college, taught me about
