Life & Work with Corey Breedlove of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Breedlove

Corey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I struggled with alot of health issues as a kid and music was my solace, a place to put my head. It’s been a place of healing and it’s own challenges but it’s everything to me. I’ve been a songrwiter mostly, probably have completed around 300 songs since I began music. I was in a really dark place after my first major romantic hearbreak when I was about 22 and I found a frank sinatra Cd for 99c at the book store. I’d never heard music so beautiful. Sinatra just cut deep and right to the heart of the lyrics. I started performing in lounges and jazz clubs in DFW. I now do mostly private events, but play about 5 nights a week. Currently working on my second record, in the style of american songbook with elements of blues, jazz, country and swing.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it’s very difficult being a performer. I’ve recently struggled with finding balance on and off stage. It’s hard to be so vulnerable every day. It feels like you never have a chance to turn it off. And of course the music industry is impossibly challenging.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love the classics. I feel like music and art have struggled to find an identity in this modern age. I love the old songs from the 1940s, every time I hear nat king cole or frank sinatra, it transports me to a beautiful place. I’d love to be a messenger for that type of music. To take people on a journey to a golden age of creativity and culture.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Absolutely. My family, my girlfriend, and my church counselor have helped me break out of a very dark cycle. The entertainment industry will take its toll on everyone in unique ways. My great uncle was a very successful painter based in new mexico and I look up to him for direction, in spirit now. He passed a few years ago.
