Life & Work with Danny Villar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Villar.

Hi Danny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A couple of years ago my wife expressed she wanted to turn our office into a reading room. With a Pinterest pic and some YouTube videos, I faced the challenge and created a beautiful wall unit for her. Since then, I have become fascinated with woodworking. This love of mine has spilled over in providing fellow craftsmen with the material they need to make their masterpieces a reality. I created the kind of wood store I wished was around as a woodworker. That is how The Wood Shed got its start.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I began selling scraps out of my garage which allowed me to build relationships with fellow woodworkers. Eventually, people started asking me for dimensional slabs and encouraging me to open up a store. My wife and I prayed on it and decided to take a leap of faith by opening up the first store in August 2020. We have found so much joy in serving the local woodworking community that I recently quit my day job and opened up a second store in April of this year. From the very beginning, we have witnessed God’s hand in our business and while today we are in love with the opportunity to serve our customers, we are more in love with the One who sustains us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Now that I have more time to dedicate myself to the craft of woodworking, I am able to create fine epoxy river tables and live edge pieces. The second store we opened includes a showroom where I can showcase my creations, truly a maker’s dream come true. Our store is both known for its great variety of domestic and exotic hardwoods as well as an array of live edge slabs. We carry several domestic species of Walnut, Pecan, and Elm as well as exotics such as Monkey Pod from Fiji and Olive Wood from both Turkey and Israel. We are a small family-owned business, we may not always be able to compete with big-box store prices, but you will always find unique quality pieces and a friendly smile to walk you through our selection. At the Wood Shed, shoptalk is treasured and a firm handshake is valued.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
At our store, we have always been open to collaborating with other makers and industry suppliers. We have joined up with several makers to provide epoxy/live edge classes. We also carry all the products necessary to create your own master pieces including epoxy, pigments, forms, and everything in between. The heart behind our store is the desire to see everyone succeed creatively.
