Life & Work with Debra Taylor of Flint

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Taylor.

Hi Debra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Lake Cabin Escapes grew out of a life we were already building. We’re Kevin and Debra Taylor, and in 2006 we purchased a rural East Texas property anchored by an abandoned farmhouse. It needed extensive restoration, but it offered something more important to us at the time—space to raise our six children. We moved in, restored the home, and built a life there, including a small farming venture centered around Noonday onions, a well-known East Texas crop with a loyal following.

As our children grew and began leaving home, we started thinking about what was next. Around that time, one of our kids introduced us to Airbnb, and we had already been exploring the idea of building a simple cabin. We designed and built our first one ourselves, listed it, and it booked almost immediately. That early success showed us we were onto something.

From the beginning, our inspiration came from our own marriage. For over 30 years, we’ve made it a priority to get away together each year—often to small, quiet cabins. Those experiences became the blueprint for what we would create. With Kevin’s background in real estate and construction and Debra’s background in marketing and design, we thoughtfully built each space to reflect the kind of elevated, peaceful retreats we personally sought out.

We grew organically, reinvesting as we went and adding one cabin at a time. Today, the property includes five private cabins, a waterfront lake house, and guest accommodations within the original farmhouse. Each space is intentionally designed with amenities that encourage rest and reconnection—private hot tubs, private ponds, Lake Palestine access, and even a natural cold plunge, all set against the quiet beauty of the countryside and rural farmland.

Most of our guests come from cities like Dallas, Houston, and Austin, looking to unplug—whether that’s sitting by the fire, stargazing, or simply enjoying the stillness of nature. We live on the property and personally host each guest, which has become not just our business, but our full-time life. Kevin is still a local realtor and we personally love hosting in our home and being fully involved with our adult children and grandchildren.

At its core, Lake Cabin Escapes is about creating a space where couples can slow down, reconnect, and prioritize what matters most. We love helping others fulfill romantic getaways and weekend escapes at Lake Palestine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road—and honestly, that’s been a big part of what’s shaped our business into what it is today.

In the early days, there was a lot of trial and error. We started this long before there were endless resources, coaches, and systems, so we were figuring everything out as we went—pricing, guest communication, cleaning routines, and what truly makes a stay special.

Some of our biggest challenges have come from the physical side of building and maintaining the property. Our land has varied terrain, including hills, which made construction more complex than we expected. The waterfront home—our largest and nicest property—is something we’re incredibly proud of, but it was an 18-month process because we built so much of it ourselves. We used local lumber, even wood right off our own land, and while we’re not afraid of hard work, that season definitely stretched us. Even now, the ongoing maintenance and upkeep is constant—there’s always something that needs attention.

At the same time, the technology side of the business has been a huge learning curve. After staying home for years raising our kiddos, stepping into managing booking platforms, guest communication, pricing tools, and all the systems that keep things running smoothly has been a big adjustment. I now handle all of the guest management side, along with the laundry and keeping everything turning over efficiently, while Kevin takes care of maintenance and repairs. We do call in help when needed, but he handles as much as he can, so for both of us, this really is a full-time, everyday job. Kevin still has a career as a realtor and we both love being available for our adult kids and grandkids.

We’ve also had to learn how to work together in a whole new way. We don’t always agree on how things should be done, but we’ve learned to come back to the same focus: what’s best for the guest experience. That perspective helps guide our decisions and keeps us aligned, even when we see things differently.

As the short-term rental space has grown, we’ve also seen a big increase in competition. We started long before so many others entered the Airbnb market, when it was much more organic and relationship-driven. Now, with so many properties available, we’ve had to continually learn, adapt, and elevate the guest experience to stand out—paying attention to the small details, creating memorable stays, and making sure our guests feel truly cared for.

There have also been challenges with difficult or unexpected guest situations and the natural seasonality of bookings. But through it all, each challenge has helped us grow—refining our systems, strengthening our partnership, and shaping the kind of thoughtful, hands-on experience we want every guest to have.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We own and operate Lake Cabin Escapes, a collection of waterfront vacation rentals designed to help people slow down, reconnect, and enjoy time together. After raising a large family, hosting has always come naturally to us—it’s something we genuinely love. What started about 10 years ago as a simple idea has grown organically into a thriving business, built on repeat guests, word-of-mouth, and a commitment to creating meaningful guest experiences.

We specialize in cozy, thoughtfully designed lakefront stays that feel personal and welcoming, not just like a place to sleep. Over the years, as the short-term rental market has become more competitive, we’ve had to continually learn, adapt, and elevate every part of the guest experience—from communication and cleanliness to amenities and the overall atmosphere. We take pride in staying hands-on and detail-oriented, always looking for ways to improve and stand out.

We are known for not being afraid of hard work and taking risks and challenges! We genuinely care about people and Kevin has a true gift for making people feel welcome and loved. We both love the simple things in life and having fun in everyday experiences. We hope to help guests experience that same thing at Lake Cabin Escapes!

What we’re most proud of is the consistency of our guest experience and the relationships we’ve built along the way. Many of our guests return year after year, and that loyalty means everything to us. What truly sets us apart is that we didn’t build this from a formula or a course—we figured it out through real experience, genuine hospitality, and a deep desire to create a place where people can truly unwind and make memories.

Thanks so much,
Debra

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I would have to say the Bible is our most used book that helps us navigate Life. This is something we have committed to reading daily and it helps us both to keep our focus on our faith. This helps us to keep God , our Faith and then family, work and others as priority. We are actually both new to the world of podcasts and apps so this is something we are exploring. We both love history books and classic films, Some of our cabin names reflect that.
