Today we’d like to introduce you to Denzell Johnson.
Hi Denzell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been writing songs since I was 9. I spent most of my childhood writing song, stories, and poems to strengthen my writing ability; and because I didn’t have the resources to do much else. When I was 17 and started working on my own, I was able to get my own recording equipment. Since then, I’m been teaching myself how to produce and engineer my own music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A lot of my struggles creatively were from lack of resources and inability to explain my vision. I couldn’t afford the things I needed to consistently make my sound and look appealing. When I could afford things like studio time, I couldn’t get people to understand what I was trying to create because I couldn’t explain the ideas and sounds in my head. It made me have to figure out how to make the most out of every opportunity.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love to create things that make you think. The sound selection usually is its own thought process, but for most of my songs, I want to just tell stories you have to think about. That make you feel something. I’m most proud of my growth. I’ve always believed in my ability, but I was never the most confident or outgoing person. I’m most proud that my belief in myself is starting to match my belief in my ability to create. I honestly don’t think I’m much “different” or better than anyone else. If anything sets me apart from others, it would be how I get up after I fall. One person’s “No” doesn’t change another person’s “Yes.” And until I physically can’t get up and keep putting in work for my dreams and desires, nothing will stop me from creating and sharing it with the world.
