Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Sumpter.
Hi Desmond, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My background is in program management , large-scale logistics and operations leadership. I’ve had the opportunity to manage complex supply chain organizations, optimize performance, and oversee transportation networks at a high level. Through those experiences, I learned how critical efficiency, accountability, and relationships are in this industry.
Over time, I felt a strong desire to transition from managing operations within large corporations to building something of my own, something that reflected my leadership style, standards, and long-term vision. Empire Freight was created to deliver reliable, performance-driven transportation solutions while operating with integrity.
What started as a single truck and a commitment to excellence has grown into a developing transportation operation. As contracts have expanded, so has the fleet but more importantly, so has our infrastructure, processes, and relationships.
Today, Empire Freight stands as a business built on discipline, operational structure, and long-term vision. We are not just moving freight, we are building a scalable transportation enterprise that serves our partners at a high level.
The journey is still unfolding, and we’re just getting started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road and I believe that’s true for anyone building something meaningful from the ground up.
The transportation industry is competitive and capital-intensive. Early on, one of the biggest challenges was managing cash flow while scaling responsibly. Equipment costs, insurance premiums, and maintenance expenses all require disciplined financial planning. There’s very little room for error when you’re operating assets daily.
Another challenge has been building consistent contracts while maintaining service standards. Growth is exciting, but scaling too fast without structure can hurt a business. I’ve had to be intentional about expanding the fleet only when the infrastructure, drivers, and systems were ready to support it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work sits at the intersection of large scale operations leadership and hands on transportation execution.
I began my career with Amazon working in Operations Program Management within complex supply chain environments. There, I led cross-functional initiatives across fulfillment, transportation optimization, vendor management, and supply chain performance. My focus was always on improving efficiency, reducing cost, and building systems that could scale. I became known for being analytical, process-driven, and calm under pressure, especially when managing high-volume operations with tight deadlines.
Today, as the founder of Empire Freight, I apply those same principles in a more entrepreneurial setting.
I’m most proud of the transition from leading operations within billion-dollar systems to building my own. Taking the experience I gained in Seattle at Amazon and applying it to create Empire Freight, building something that reflects my leadership is something I take great pride in.
