Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Webster.
Hi Dominique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up I never really had a love for art as much as you would think is needed for tattooing. Sit back and take and relive this journey with me. Back in 2010-11, Kansas City, MO. I came across a full tattoo setup. One coil machine, a power supply and a few inks. I had no idea what any of it was supposed to to do. The kit sat in the corner of my two bedroom apartment where I shared with my son and mother (great place to have tattoo equipment huh). One night I decided I wanted to see what it does and how it works. So of course I messed something’s up. Trying to repair the power supply and touched some wires that shouldn’t have been touched and almost blew my face off. With that I ordered another powers supply because now I’m interested in the mechanics of it. From there it was countless nights of watching YouTube videos and studying how to set the needle, needle depth and overall process of laying a tattoo. My first ever client (kids mother) must have really believed in me or was sleepy, she allowed me to tattoo the word “LOVE” on her thigh. It took 4 hours to do it and after all that after healing it did not stay lol. Now I feel defeated so I have to figure this out. Back to staying up till 5am watching videos practicing on oranges. Client #2 (brother in law) and this was just names so let me redeem myself and yes it stayed wasn’t the best squiggly lines but it stayed. Now it’s time to tattoo all my friends and ppl in the complex lol. Shout out to everyone that allowed me to practice. 2012 I then moved into a home where I was able to turn the office into my in home studio. Business was picking up and at this time I still have no source of supplies other than ordering off eBay lol. Yea I know some quality right. One day scrolling instagram I ran across a guy by name of Ty The Tattoo Guy. Sent him a DM asking if I could buy some ink from him and if he could mentor me. His instant response “MEET ME AT THE SHOP” from that day on we became the best of friends practically brother and he took me under his wings and taught me everything he could. 2013-2014 “Ink Addition” tattoo studio was open where I was able to work with some of the greatest artist I knew at that time. I basically was the little brother soaking up every piece of information, technics and styles I could learn. We spent plenty of nights at the shop not getting home till 5-6am the next morning. A lot of my career I owe to Ty who is still my brother best friend and kids God father 15 years later. 2016 I moved to Dallas it was hard leaving the team but I knew I wanted to build in a different market. Although as soon as I got here I did not tattoo . Until 2019 I met a guy here who owned salon suites and had a open suite. This is when the Fearless Brand came to life. I was able to work next to an amazing woman Lisa Love and partnered with her Love Wrapz brand, where she taught me a lot when it comes to entrepreneurial thinking. Fearless is everything. Remain fearless in everything you want to do and just do it. I have now been tattooing I Dallas for about 5 years now and have been able to create for over thousands of ppl in the DFW area. We have a lot of things coming up I am highly grateful for all the love and support and look forward to continue building relationship with each and every last one of you and continue to turn your vision into ink. We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not smooth as ppl think. With any business you have your seasons that can be a little challenging. But with learned patterns comes adjustments
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I have learned more and fell in love with art, I can’t look at anything without visualizing how I would tattoo it.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding someone that’s gonna tell you “That sucks” respectfully. Someone to hold you accountable and see things from a lens different than your own. Your marketing starts when you client walks out the door. Everyday try to market yourself in some fashion. Especially with social media you should have at least 2-3 post of your work per day. Never stop working
