Life & Work with Erica Grady

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Grady.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love for poetry started as early as my teenage years throughout middle and high school. English was always my favorite school subject. I wrote my first poem at the shy age of 15 when I experienced my first heartbreak from puppy love. I still remember it like it was yesterday; I was lying in bed crying my eyes out in the dark with my lava lamp on while 702 “Get It Together” blared from my speakers. I had a big binder that I kept lyrics to songs in that I wrote out, and I was writing the lyrics to the 702 song. I turned to a blank page and started rhythmically writing my feelings down and felt instant relief. The next day I took the poem to school and let my best friend read it, and she was like, “Erica, this is good can you write me a poem to give to my bf”? From there, I started writing poems for people. It died down a bit as I got older and into adulthood until I found myself heartbroken again and wrote my very first poem in my adult life, “Ode To My Ex,” back in 2020, and since then my pen has never left my side!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Somewhat lol. Initially, I had major issues with stage fright. There was also the struggle of putting all my lil business in these streets and the judgment from others. However, being able to inspire and motivate others through my poetry and knowing that others can relate and I speak for them and how they feel or what they want to say means everything! Not to mention, poetry is my therapy and passion, so that’s a bonus!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative all the way around. I am a poet, comedian, singer, and writer. I can do it all, and my versatility sets me apart from most. I’m most proud of stepping out in faith and tapping into my creative sides and my many talents and the fact that I stopped procrastinating and sleeping in myself!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would definitely say consistency and being my true self, and letting my personality shine through and speak for me!
