Today we’d like to introduce you to Femme Feral.
Femme, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sadie and Raimi met in 2024 working together at a coffee shop. Bonding over the perils of making lattes, they quickly became friends (soul sisters, if you will) and realized they had a shared passion for filmmaking. In between, or (sometimes in place of) working they would talk nonstop about their favorite movies, music, and it seemed like stories would appear out of thin air.
Their first film started out as just a passion project, but after realizing how well they worked together and how much fun they had, Femme Feral was born. Why stop at just one film?
The idea behind the production company was to present female rage in eerie, vibrant, and artistic aesthetics. To give life to unusual stories, and create Films for the Weird.
They have two short films released and have at least two in pre production currently.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Filmmaking isn’t cheap, and so to do it on little to no budget has been challenging.
Sadie would make and sell jewelry to fund the projects, we would thrift all of our props and set dressings, and rely on collaborators to volunteer their services.
Finding a crew that works for donuts can be challenging. Finding a crew that works for donuts and is also passionate about the art is even more so challenging.
It’s the people that show up for us, that show up for the sake of art, is what makes Femme Feral so special. Because it’s become something more than just the two of us. It’s growing into a community. We are so, so thankful for the people who’ve supported us and our projects and made them come to life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Femme Feral is a female owned and operated film production company that believes art thrives in community. Our mission is to bring together small artists and empower female and queer voices.
In the film industry, women aren’t often trusted with the more technical aspects of filmmaking – and we want to change that. So, we decided to create our own space, where no story is too small and anyone is welcome to contribute.
Female film makers are associated with traditional girly things like romance, however, we take our films to a darker and more vulnerable place. Most people try to ignore the ugly emotions women have, like rage and deep sadness, but that’s just a part of being human.
Women don’t have to just be the happy, pretty love interest – they can be the scream queen, ugly, monsters, the loner. Women don’t always need to be someone who needs saving or fixing, they can be just a woman going through it.
We shouldn’t be shamed into hiding emotions to please society. We should be able to scream out our inner demons. People watch film to feel something, and feel connected- we want women to feel like they can be themselves and not just someone who has to act and look pretty. We encourage the stories that show the ugly and bloody horrors of being a woman.
How do you think about happiness?
Everyone asks, “What’s your favorite holiday?” and most people expect you to say “Christmas”. However, our favorite holiday is Halloween.
We love horror, science fiction, gothic fantasy and all the creepy elements that come with Halloween. We both love dressing up and expressing ourselves through costume. Fashion is an artistic outlet and with Halloween we both get to have the joy of putting together a homemade costume. Seeing people fully commit to dressing up and being as wacky as possible brings genuine joy, because so many other days out of the year, we are told to push down artistic expression that’s considered “too much”. Having a day where the people who are told they dress too gothic or too weird, like us, is liberating. We get to walk the streets looking like we came straight out of a Tim Burton film and the feeling of not having to hide or do less is something I can’t describe.
We often have the moment before we go to a function where we think “is this too much?” ” what if they don’t dress up?” “will I be the one left out of the loop?’ but when you surround yourself with other artists you never have to question that. Especially when it’s Halloween. We go HARD for Halloween and when others do too, we don’t feel as alone.
