Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernika Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started when I was a little girl braiding hair. I always had a love for doing hair. After Graduating College with a Dual Degree in Business & Fine Arts. I decided to embark on this journey with furthering my education going to Cosmetology school. I later received my license and open up my very first store Front called Hair Renity Beauty Bar in 2015 which was a learning experience. If it had not been for my mother believing in me and pushing me this could not have been possible. I always worked extremely hard, long hours, day and night to build my business. Then came ” This thing called Life” which took a toll on me. After birthing my second child. I decided to stop and put my business on hold “doing hair”. I wanted to focus on raising my children. I felt like being a mother and running a business, and trying to stay on top of things wasn’t working to the best of my ability. So, I gave up on my passion for operating my business completely.
Fast forward to 2020, my family and I had moved from Miami to Dallas to get a fresh start. This was in the beginning of the pandemic. It was hard to stay employed due to the way the virus was affecting many families and made me look at things differently. This was an eye-opening for me. But I later began to feel incomplete. I knew something in my life was missing, I just knew I wasn’t doing enough and I was missing out on my calling. I always was the young lady who kept her hair done. I would change my hair 2-3 a week. Coming to Dallas and looking for a hairstylist to style my hair the way I’m a custom to was very rare. Most stylists was either too far or just didn’t have that gift that I was looking for. Something finally hit me and I began to tell myself “You need to get back out there and start back doing hair.” I began to do my hair and install my own Lace Wigs and kept getting great feedback on my installs and quality of the hair.
The main difference I would say with my old brand and my current brand is that now I would be providing luxury hair & products to my customers. Years ago, I would only provide service and limit myself to other things I could offer. Once I felt like I had everything together and did enough research, you know the name, logo, target audience, etc. it was time to present Hair Renity to the world. In mid-year of 2021, I rebrand and began to market myself using social media platforms. The amount of love the Dallas girls are showing is mind-blowing! I began to build clientele and start growing slowly but surely and that’s because my work began to speak for itself. I’m extremely blessed to be where I’m at today. I would like to Thank Voyage for recognizing my work and grateful for the opportunity.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ll transition from a different state and coming to Dallas wasn’t a smooth road because in this industry meeting the Customers’ needs was a tab bit different than Miami Fl. I had decided to rebrand during this entire COVID pandemic. I had to understand What was my purpose, what can I do differently, and how to set myself apart from other hairstylists in Dallas. I had to learn to adjust because my life had done a complete 360. Eventually, I had to figure out how to make a second source of income because my kids are depending on me. Being a mother is all I know and my kids always been my motivation. I criticize myself a lot thinking about what could’ve been or should’ve happened when I had my first store Front in Miami. But I later step out my shell began to network and took off from there.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am Hairstylist that specializes weaves and slaying lace providing my clients the luxury experience. My target audience is to help provide Mothers and daughters the Luxury hair experience.
I’m most proud of how hard I’m working to build my brand. I have never worked this hard before in my life besides the time I was expecting my 2nd child and opening up my storefront at the same time. Coming to a complete different state where you don’t know anyone and attracting new clients and promoting my business was by far not easy. Hair Renity is something I take pride in. My main goal is to get better every day and not limit myself on how far I can go. I’m proud of myself for not rushing the process. I had to learn the importance of rerunning a business and rebranding and perfecting my craft and take a different approach along this new journey. One of the main things that set me apart from others is my customer service. I’m very personable with my clients because this is a luxury experience and I want to ensure they are satisfied. One can style your hair and provide you service, but if the customer service is poor and the Quality of the hair is poor, no one is going to shop with you again! I like to have my customers returning back.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
“In five years, I do see myself running my own salon here in the city. The experience I’ll gain here in the next five years will be invaluable to me when I set out on my own. In addition, I see myself achieving a better business relationship in the communities and ranked in the top ’20s of most recognized business in the hair industry.
