Today we’d like to introduce you to Geneva McAskill-Zoll.
Hi Geneva, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Grew up gardening and Canning with my grandparents. Joined the marine corps at 18 and managed a restaurant off and on for twenty years raised my child always have had a garden. Got remarried at 38 years old after a 17 year marriage ended and started farming with my husband. Began canning and preserving foods and dehydrating herbs. My friends would always ask for jellies or pickles and that turned into me selling some items I canned. I put a Yellow Cupboard on my porch and began posting the items on my Facebook page and so began my business! It grew into a small room on my porch and now a 10×20 building! I am teaching women how to can and preserve and grow their food.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Time constraints! We farm full time. So I always he either had to be in the hay fields baling hay or cutting hay or tending livestock. I had goats, chickens, cows, a large garden and all the farm chores went with it.. I have downsized, I got rid of my goats.I kept thirty chickens to have fresh farm eggs for my farm store. We downsized the cow herd out of necessity because farmland in ellis county is becoming neighborhoods rapidly.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Zoll Farms and The Yellow Cupboard i specialize in raising bottle calves. There was a time when people all over ellis county would call me for advice on a sick calf. I’m also known for being apart of a nonprofit organization that we built, the city park for the city of Maypearl we fundraised for 8 years to build the park. I was also in the Washington Post for taking down a corrupt police chief for molesting young girls in our community. I am most proud of being a part of my community and creating a space for our youth to play and families to enjoy.
Canning takes a long time! So I need an entire day to process batches of prouduct.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I have the attitude of don’t back down and don’t quit. Constantly pushing myself.
To do better, to be better person, to make better prouducts and learn new skills for my business.
I am currently building my apothecary to make my own essential oils and herbal medicine/teas.
