Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald Vinnett, Jr.
Hi Gerald, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Started off as a backyard barbecue enthusiast and family pitmaster. I’ve always enjoyed putting meat to a fire and having a good time. After being selected as a grant recipient for the 2021 Inaugural Kingsford Preserve The Pit Initiative, I decided to share my talents with the world. I’ve taken time to hone my craft, and now I’ve gone from backyard cooks to competing in the world’s largest BBQ Competitions Memphis in May and New Orleans-based Hogs For the Cause BBQ Competition. Currently cooking various festivals and corporate and family-centered events.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Road has not always been smooth. It was initially difficult to understand the process and business side of BBQ. Going from backyard cooking to competition to catering is not an exact science, so I had a major learning curve. “Imposter syndrome” was also an issue that I had to get over, wondering was I good enough, do I know what I’m doing, and early issues with confidence were something I had to get over, and over time I have done that. Believing in yourself and your process is key. Not being afraid to fail
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I work as a Maintenance Superintendent at the local power company. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana State University. I’m most proud of my confidence and drive, positive outlook on life, and personality is what sets me apart from others. There’s a solution to every problem you have to find it and be willing to work for it.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be playing sports with my brother Jasper Vinnett, baseball, and football from kids to high school. High School Football is really big where I come from, so I remember my dad bringing us to the games wearing the kids’ jerseys and waiting for our turn to play. Now full circle my brother is the Athletic Director and football coach, and I regularly BBQ for the faculty, staff, and football on the sideline during the games. It’s a great feeling.
