Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayisha Alexander.
Hi Hayisha, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began creating custom clothing for my family and friends in college. I made my first custom piece around 2011! A few years later, I became a mother and began making custom clothing for my son in 2014.
My family and friends strongly encouraged me to start a business to share my talents with the world. So, I started Young Lion Co. in January of 2017!
I began customizing clothing and accessories for children but I was struggling with my emotional and mental health after tragically losing my parents, having a child shortly after, and then trying to mask my pain with fashion.
So, I took some time off to work on my health and focus on my bringing my true passions back to life. I went to therapy and began working on my healing!
During the pandemic, I realized how lost I felt without creating. Although I was healthier and more mentally stable, I still felt lost. I KNEW it was time to bring the Lions back! In August of 2021, I launched my new service, “Custom Crocs” and have been back in the game ever since! I now customize Crocs, clothing, and accessories for all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey hasn’t been the easiest but like they say, “God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.”
Losing my parents was the hardest for me. I lost my dad first and then my mother a few years later. My son was only six months old when my mom passed. I spiraled into a fit of grief-fueled anger and depression.
Young Lion Co was my first attempt at healing. I tried to throw myself into my passion to change my focus but that PTSD and anxiety ain’t gon play witcha!
After having a few run-ins with the law, I had to step back from my passion and focus on my health. I finally decided to seek help. So, I went to therapy and found peace! I had to focus on my mental and emotional health so I could effectively pursue my passion.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in customizing Crocs, clothing, and accessories for the family!
I am known for taking basic clothing and making it pop with patches, bling, and anything else I can get my hands on.
I am most proud of making people feel unique and special when they rock their custom gear!
Young Lion stands out because I can take anything old or new and make it special for YOU. I create one-of-a-kind pieces that truly bring the Lion up out ya! lol
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe there are so many ways to find a mentor! The absolute best way is to allow them to find you. Don’t chase, attract! You have to put yourself in a position to be seen.
My first mentor is my grandma. She’s an accountant who owns one of the oldest black-owned/woman-owned accounting firms in Dallas, Texas. She has helped me to find mentors by taking me to a plethora of events in the city and introducing me to her clients and friends.
I personally network by going to vending events as often as possible. I also find and support similar or like-minded creators in my field via social media to tap in with!
