Life & Work with Jamal Sharp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Sharp.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started when I was attending Florida A&M University. During my time at the school, I built my name up and did a lot of work for creators, clients, and businesses there. After graduating, I continued my work throughout Florida, acquiring a studio in Pensacola, FL, my hometown. Then I relocated to Dallas and happy to meet everyone here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth at all, but it has been fulfilling. There are slow moments or times where things are not going your way, but I use those times to perfect my craft and learn more… I always allow myself to be teachable.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is very versatile that sets me apart from others. I can do studio shots, lifestyle, editorial, animals, products, video, anything really. Most people have a set style, but mine varies. I probably specialize more in my studio work, but I am trying to perfect other styles now. While I still enjoy taking photos, I am tryna get get more into filmmaking.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
To anyone starting out my advice is to literally keep going. Literally, fall in love with. Your craft and just study every day. When I started, I did not go a day without rummaging through YouTube videos for hours trying to learn something new. The best thing to do is not stop learning and just keep going. Do not get caught up in what gear you are supposed to have. A creator can create with anything.
