Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana Hazlewood.
Hi Jana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began working in the floral department of MJ Designs during college and never gave a second thought to compliments I received on my work. This was a part time job and I was headed for the Corporate world I’ve been in for many years. During the summer of 2024 one of my daughters became engaged and we started planning her wedding. We found a venue that handled quite a bit of the decor so I decided to try my hand at making the bridal bouquet. I’d made boutonnière and small bouquets for my daughters during high school and have made floral arrangements off and on for years. I watched videos and practiced and fell in love with floral design and haven’t looked back. For some reason, it just clicks with me and I love trying more and more complicated arrangements. I recently designed a floral flow for a serpentine table and a gorgeous fountain floral arrangement. I love working out the mechanics and then seeing it come to life. I specialize in weddings and love making the couple’s day absolutely beautiful.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been fun and bewildering sometimes. I love meeting new people and collaborating and I even love all the physical work involved. The frustrating part is bride’s expectations versus their budget and not realizing flowers are expensive. Pinterest is a great tool for planning but I think it does give a bride an expectation they want to match and the sticker shock is hard to deliver for us florists. Especially since our inclination is to make a bride’s day beautiful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my everyday life it seems like my mind never turns off. I’m always problem solving all the time. What I love about floral design is my mind turns off and I just create and it’s a great feeling. Especially when I see the final result and others love my work too. It’s very satisfying.
What’s next?
My plans for the future are to continue to build my business through collaboration and networking. I enjoy every minute of it so I cannot wait to see where my business will take me in the next few years.
