Hi Jane, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had countless interests in life. My hair career started in 2012 but after some personal hardships, I pursued a career in physical therapy while cutting hair on the side. I missed being in the salon and found my inspiration to make my way back into a salon home. Hair Revival Studio has been my second home ever since. Here is where all the magic happened. I found my love for color again and built a business rapidly through hard work, perseverance, and social media. I’ve been growing my brand and finding ways to elevate my skillset while enjoying the ride. I dedicated my time to social media, where I was able to gain my clientele as well as referrals from my sweet clients. Now, I can proudly say I’m a level 4 stylist, focusing on both cuts and color, but the work doesn’t stop here. I see myself traveling and taking clients in other states or maybe dipping into the world of photoshoots. The possibilities are endless! I’ve also been taking a UX boot camp to dip into the technology world while showcasing my creativity through hair.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wish I could say yes but my journey has made me who I am today. My first salon, at 21 years old, had a high turnover of stylists, and I struggled to gain the education and apprenticeship needed after cosmetology school. Fast forward to the present, I struggled with my identity as a hairdresser due to always striving for perfection. I had to let go of the assumption that I had to be good at everything. I was hard on myself when making mistakes, but that’s how I became so much stronger in many aspects. I was juggling 2 careers to make ends meet while trying to build a brand that had no direction. The struggle to pay bills was always on my mind. The stress and anxiety would always drown me in doubt, but I have a great support system to reassure me that I am human and I am also capable of anything. Call me ambitious, I really do have so many interests in life which also comes with hardships.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist specializing in all brunettes, blondes, and customized cuts. Growing up with thick, coarse hair has always been a challenge to maintain, so I wanted to break down that barrier for others and help my clients navigate any challenges with their hair. I pride myself on educating my clients on how to maintain their hair health. From high-impact blonding to lived-in brunettes, I love to create something for each client sitting in my chair because it’s never a one-size-fits-all. Seeing my client’s face light up, the moment I turn them around in the chair ignites a fire in me. Specializing in cuts or color wasn’t my thing, I wanted to do it all. The beautiful part of the hair industry is that I get to meet people from all walks of life and not only am I blessed to have the opportunity to meet so many incredible humans, but I also have a creative outlet. Hair is like art. It’s ever-changing, and there’s always room for growth. Growing up, my parents put me in art school for years during the weekends. I guess you can say, it’s helped my overall dexterity in hand painting and color theory. So thanks mom and dad!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During the COVID crisis, my focus was primarily on my healthcare career and helping my mom stay afloat with her donut shop. Covid affected me in so many ways during that time, mentally and physically. We lost our donut shop and I worked with really sick patients through the crisis. The hair industry also took a major hit. To this very day, clients are still experiencing hair complications from COVID-19, and I’m continuously educating them on the best at-home regimen to improve the strength and growth of their hair. As a hairstylist, you’re naturally a therapist the moment the client sits in your chair. As women, our hair, skin, and nails are a direct reflection of our hormones and health. The stress from COVID-19 correlates to significant hair loss, which I think as hairstylists, we will be working through for a while. A lesson I learned from working through the crisis in various conditions is diversification and having multiple revenue streams while saving for emergency funds. Hearing what each client went through during COVID really shows how our health should be a top priority, or we wouldn’t be able to focus on anything else in life.
