Life & Work with Jay Lyons of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Lyons.

Hi Jay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was introduced to the Dallas music scene during my time working at—eventually managing—The Free Man Cajun Cafe, a well-known hub for local talent in Deep Ellum. My journey into talent management began when I started assisting a Dallas drummer with bookings during the early days of his band. Before we could build momentum, personal circumstances led me to Jacksonville, FL, where I lived for about six months. Upon returning to Dallas, I felt a strong pull to reconnect with the music community. I posted on my Instagram story expressing interest in artist management, and while several people responded, one message stood out. After a brief conversation with Justin Crump, he DM’d me saying, “Man, you have no idea how hard I’ve been trying. I pray this will become great.” That was on September 24, 2023. Just two months later, on November 24, 2023, Church for the World performed at Three Links in Deep Ellum. Since then, they’ve performed almost monthly, most recently opening for rock bands Tantric and Smile Empty Soul at The Rail in Fort Worth. In December 2024, I also began working with R&B singer Ashley Kaee, booking her first show with me on New Year’s Eve at Hillside Social in Cedar Hill. From January onward, Ashley has performed every month across the city. My story truly begins with partnering with two powerhouse, underrated talents in Dallas.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Artist management has been the most challenging endeavor I’ve ever taken on. With a full-time corporate career in Customer Engagement and Account Management, handling the logistics and organization comes naturally to me. What’s most difficult is the emotional weight that comes with being so deeply invested in the growth of my artists. I genuinely believe in the purity and divine purpose of these individuals and who they’re meant to become. So, when venues reject or completely ignore us, it hits hard. Navigating the cliques and gatekeeping culture makes it even more frustrating. It often feels like I can see so clearly that someone is a star, but so few recognize their light. My mission is to help remove those blinders and prove they’re worthy of every opportunity.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a manager for indie musicians, I wear a lot of hats—from booking shows and budgeting finances to handling marketing and promotion. What sets me apart, from the perspective of others, is my empathy and genuine commitment to my artists’ success. I’m not in this for clout or a potential payday; I’m here to help elevate my artists to the next stage of their careers—whatever that looks like for them. I won’t take on new talent until I’ve fully poured into the ones I currently manage. Church for the World is on a path to transform how people experience faith-based music, and Ashley Kaee is breathing new life into R&B/Soul with real vocals, emotional depth, and a return to musical artistry. My only goal is to help bring their visions to life.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always open to collaborating—with artists, venue owners, other managers, and anyone passionate about local artists. If your goal is to uplift and shine a light on the underserved indie music community, I want to connect with you. Let’s build something meaningful together.
