Life & Work with Jay’s Camp of Cedar Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay’s Camp.

Jay’s, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Jay’s Camp started with my love for DFW Swingout. I was determined in my journey to master the craft and quickly developed the desire to train others. Through the years, I asked others to help me with this goal and now have five instructors who work hard alongside me: Tiffany, Kisha, Jermaine, Charles, and Gina. We all work hard so that people not only learn the dance but feel the energy and culture that surrounds it.

What began as a small group of dancers coming together has grown into a full community where people find family, fitness, and fun on the dance floor. We’ve built a space where new dancers feel welcome, seasoned dancers are challenged, and everyone leaves feeling better than when they came in. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, workshops, and The Artistry Lab, which gives dancers deeper training and confidence.

The journey hasn’t been without its challenges — from balancing our personal lives with the demands of growing a dance community, to learning how to make the business side of things work. But seeing the joy, the friendships, and the confidence our dancers gain makes it all worth it. Today, Jay’s Camp is more than just classes — it’s a movement, and we’re excited about where it’s going next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Teaching consistently for over ten years brings its own set of challenges. We’ve had seasons where finding and keeping the right location was difficult, times when instructors shifted, and moments when students weren’t satisfied with the direction we were going. Those experiences weren’t easy, but they taught us how to adapt, stay consistent, and keep our focus on building community through dance.

We’ve also experienced the tension that can come when you step outside of the box in the broader dance community. Any time you push boundaries or bring something new to the table, there can be discord. We’ve learned to navigate those moments with professionalism, reminding ourselves that innovation is part of growth.

What looked like obstacles in the moment have actually strengthened us. Every disgruntled student, every transition, every tough decision has shaped Jay’s Camp into what it is today — a place that’s still standing, still growing, and still committed to giving people more than just dance lessons. Our resilience comes from keeping our mission front and center: to create a space where people feel welcomed, challenged, and inspired.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Jay’s Camp, I see our work as more than just teaching people how to dance swingout — it’s about giving people an experience. We focus on building strong fundamentals, but we also encourage creativity and individuality. That combination helps dancers feel grounded in technique while developing their own style and confidence on the floor.

What I’m most proud of is the community that has grown around Jay’s Camp. Week after week, people walk in not just for a class but for connection, encouragement, and a sense of family. When I hear students say this is the highlight of their week, or that dancing with us has impacted their lives outside of class, that reminds me why we keep showing up.

I don’t do this alone. Tiffany brings an eye for detail and a gift for building community. Jermaine’s musicality and smooth energy elevate every lesson. Kisha adds style, precision, and a deep passion for growth. Charles and Gina are our newest instructors, and they’ve added fresh perspectives, creativity, and new energy that’s been a huge benefit to the camp. Together, we create an environment where dancers are challenged, supported, and celebrated.

What sets us apart is consistency and innovation. We’ve been teaching for more than a decade, which speaks to our commitment, but we’re also not afraid to step outside of the box. From The Artistry Lab to new class formats and events, we honor the tradition of swingout while making room for fresh expression. That balance is what makes Jay’s Camp special, and it’s what keeps me excited about the future.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see swingout growing in both reach and recognition. Social media and cross-genre collaborations are already bringing in new dancers and younger generations, which will keep the style evolving. At the same time, students are looking for more structure and professionalism in how classes and events are run, so the bar for quality instruction will keep rising.

Technology will also play a big role — from virtual classes to online platforms that connect dancers across cities. Most importantly, I think swingout will continue to be recognized not just as a dance, but as a lifestyle and culture. At Jay’s Camp, we’re committed to being part of that movement, honoring the tradition while creating fresh, innovative spaces for the next generation.
