Life & Work with Jessica Rivera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rivera.

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
To start off, I am a hairstylist and color educator at Johnny Rodriguez the salon. I’m coming up on 10 years doing hair next year. I got started right out of high school. I enrolled at Toni and guy hairdressing academy in September of 2013. I graduated the following year and decided to work at Toni and guy. I was with them for about 4 years. I am so grateful for the time and experience I had with them, but it was time for me to move on to something new. So, I ended up moving over to Johnny Rodriguez the salon at legacy west, and have been there since. What really got me where I am today is hard work, determination and dedication, my passion, my why, and the love and support of my friends and family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was a pretty smooth road in the beginning. But then I hit a roadblock. I kind of felt stuck where I was and wasn’t really advancing and growing the way I wanted. I started to question if I really wanted to do hair. That’s when I decided it was time for me to move on and start fresh somewhere new. And I’m so happy I did. Since being in my new salon, I’ve had the opportunity to advance and become a color educator, which I absolutely love

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do both color and cuts. I am pretty versatile but I do specialize more in balayage, highlights, fashion colors, women’s haircuts, special event styling, and Brazilian blowouts. I would say I’ve become known pretty well at my salon for balayage services. I’m proud to see just how far I’ve come and also becoming a color educator for the salon. Honestly, nothing big sets me apart from the others because there are so many amazing stylist at the salon and in the industry. I just try to be the best I can be for myself and my clients

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best advice I can give is to never give up and stay true to yourself. First starting out in the industry can be hard. You aren’t going to make a lot, and building up a clientele is going to take time. But staying motivated and with hard work, you can easily achieve everything you want. The biggest thing I wish I knew starting out is you aren’t always going to be able to please everyone. And that’s okay
