Life & Work with Jillian Reeves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Reeves.

Hi Jillian, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started falling in love with photography in high school. I was in an AP art class that required us to take pictures of things and recreate the pictures using different materials. I would spend the entire class running around the school, taking pictures of my friends and pretty things I found outside. Once I graduated, I decided to try my hand at family photography. I had barely any idea how to work a camera or pose people, but I loved creating. As the years went on, I would spend hours watching Youtube videos to learn how to use my camera, learn how to pose people and learn lighting. With a lot of practice, I got to where I am today, working full-time as a photographer and photographing many families, weddings, events, and more!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Photography is much more than clicking. A button. At first, I thought all I needed was a nice camera and some cool presets. I quickly learned that you need to know much more than how to click a button to get the pictures I saw my favorite photographers creating. I had a hard time finding friends in the industry willing to help me in any sort of way at first. Youtube became my mentor until I met a few photographers who were willing to show me tips and tricks they use. Having a community really made all the difference in how I take my photographs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle photographer who mostly specializes in families, but I also love maternity, lifestyle newborns, headshots/branding, and events. I’m known for my pictures showing genuine smiles and laughter. I take pride in the quality of my photographs and my interactions with my clients. My photographs tell a story by showing my clients’ love for each other and how they naturally play with their family and environment.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see photography changing a lot in the next 5-10 years. With technology changing rapidly, us photographers will always be learning new equipment and techniques. Trends will also always be changing, but I try to create timeless images that every generation will enjoy.
