Life & Work with Josel Guzman of Haltom City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josel Guzman.

Josel Guzman

Hi Josel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The way it all started was in a curious funny way. I’m a firm believer that every happens for a reason. Seven years ago I used to work in a battery factory, I got fired from that job. At the moment a thought came to my mind of stop working for other people and start building something with what I used to do with my spare time, which is art, I contacted the amazing family of 23 Tattoo Shop, where Omar Lacott gave me the opportunity to teach me everything in this industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely it’s been a rocky road. I would say at first is the hardest because most of people have no trust on new tattoo artist because of the fact that they don’t want a bad tattoo, it just takes one little mistake to mess up the art work. The responsibility that a tattoo artist have upon their shoulders to do a good permanent job on the skin that meets the clients idea, likes and vision. To build a portfolio so that way people see your artwork and that way they could trust you a little bit more, you gotta find a way to overcome all those obstacles, but I’m here and still fighting my way to the goal.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Tattoo artist that specializes in Surrealism Dark Black and Grey, Anime and New School style and counting lol. I say counting because I always like to learn more. In my opinion the world of art is so big just to stick with just one style, but people know me more from my dark art style and cover ups. I would say one of the things I’m the most proud of is collaborating with other artists, showing the world that instead of competing with each other we could create something cool with different types of art like a brotherhood, I love this industry and I love all my coworkers, I’m doing my work and I think that attitude it’s what sets me apart.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best advice is for people who want to start in this industry, take your time and do your research on finding a good mentor according to the style you like, learn from friends, coworkers, everyone. Instead of going to tattoo conventions to compete, go to meet other tattoo artist learn and share knowledge, all that has worked for me so far.
