Today we’re excited to be connecting with Julie Yates again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Julie, thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Julie, I am a hairstylist of 6 years. I now have my own salon suite I named Hair Gems by Jules. I concentrate on extensions and natural hair color. Since we last spoke I’ve become a mom to the most amazing little girl who turns one this February.
I started doing hair when I was a teenager in a kitchen box dye and all! I took my sweet time getting licensed dealing with life but eventually did it and have never looked back. While I will always be looking at my next goal professionally I finally feel I am in a very good and happy place. I’ve bounced from shady salons, high end salons, was the manager a salon with 7–12 stylists- and now it’s just me in my suite. my clients are fantastic, I truly love every person that sits in my chair.
Great, so let’s jump into an update on what you have been up to since we last spoke. What can you share with us?
SO MUCH has changed since our last interview! Since 2023 I have been in my own suite in Hurst/Colleyville making my own brand and working by myself. I’ve been able to really hone my craft into the parts of it I enjoy the most. I also have really enjoyed, while also stressed by sometimes, the business side of being independent. Not only do I do hair now, but I am a photographer, videographer, social media manager, bookkeeper, inventory manager, interior designer, shampoo dealer, a snack pantry, and people think I’m their therapist too.
I’ve been able to grow and upgrade into a bigger suite in the past year which has been wild with also being a new mom. Since having my daughter I drastically changed my schedule which terrified me that I wouldn’t stay in business and I was so wrong about that! I now only work Sundays and Mondays 9-6:30ish. Turns out now that I’m not tired and pregnant i can fit a lot of people in two days. My clients have been so amazing and supportive through my life transition, I really have the dream clientele.
I am not wishing to rush my baby to grow up, but I am looking forward to when I can get back into taking more classes, going to hair shows and continuing my education.
Alright, so let’s do something a bit more fast-paced and lighthearted. We call this our lightning round and we’ll ask you a few quick questions.

What do you want people to remember about you and your brand? What are some of things that you feel are most important, unique, special, etc?
That I am here to make you feel beautiful! I am not a copy machine, but I am an artist that would love to bring your inspiration to life in a custom way for you.
It is more than just hair, it can make or break someone’s mental health to have their hair done.
Absolutely anyone from any walk of life is welcome and safe in my chair.
If someone wants something I don’t know how to, or feel confident doing, I have no problem giving a referral or letting them know I don’t know how to do something- sorry short pixie haircuts my hands just don’t get it.
Another thing I pride myself on is not judging people for doing their hair at home. That’s how I started was kitchen hair! Some people like to do their own color and I will happily hype them up, and sometimes give them a couple pointers. Some people cut their own bangs and like the way they do them. It doesn’t matter, it’s their hair and they can do what they want, I’ll always be here for help making adjustments or doing other services they want done!
We will always have a good time- if you just want to sit and watch a show, if we need to gossip, if you need to cry or laugh, or if you want to see pictures of my cute baby I got you! So if you want to come to a salon that doesn’t feel too stuffy or too uppity but still received a great service then Hair Gems is the place for you.
