Life & Work with Kayla Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Jones.

Kayla Jones

Hi Kayla, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I found yoga during my personal health journey over a decade ago. I was recovering from some digestive issues after being told I couldn’t exercise for two years while my doctors figured out what was going on with me. Not being active was difficult for me because I grew up playing soccer, tennis, and playing clarinet in marching band. Once I was cleared to begin exercising again, I was very discouraged because I had a lost a ton of my muscle mass and additional weight from being ill for so long. However, shortly after it was recommended that I try yoga from a more slow-paced approach to help ease my body back into movement. I remember trying it and falling in love with how it made me feel and how it assisted in me slowly gaining my strength back. It was also very therapeutic and helped me release emotions I knew I was holding onto because of my health experiences. Fast forward to now, I have been practicing for over 12 years and became a trauma-informed yoga teacher almost 4 years ago.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Far from smooth, but totally worth it! It took me about 5 years to finally have the means to complete my certification, and I ended up experiencing some health challenges in the midst of completing my training during the pandemic. I fought hard to get where I am today and worked very hard to gain the most authentic experience in order to impact the lives of my students. I was very intentional about the yoga teaching program I chose and made sure I continued my education in trauma-informed work.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a trauma informed yoga instructor and wellness creative, founding Soulfull Haven in 2023. Which is a yoga and wellness business specializing in trauma informed slow flows and restorative classes with emphasis on serving the BIPOC community.

I believe that connecting to body awareness and listening to the needs of our bodies intuitively helps in building our healing journey through movement. My approach is heavily centered around providing a space for the community to experience mindful release and find ease together. Which is what I feel sets us apart; I definitely still focus on honoring the origins and spiritual aspects of practicing yoga. However, I like to bring the focus more internal vs focusing solely on asana and the poses you can do.

We offer pop-up events, private events, private sessions, group sessions, and corporate partnerships.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Omg yes! Yoga with Adriene is the reason I got into yoga so deeply. Her online practices have blessed me in so many ways!

I also have two other mentors, Sanaa Jaman, and Alondra Smith, both amazing yoga instructors whose authenticity and energy always encourage me to step up my confidence. While also honoring my own unique approach to teaching this practice.
