Life & Work with Kenneth Carlisle of Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Carlisle.

Hi Kenneth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a challenging upbringing in Oak Cliff, Texas, marked by periods of substance abuse, gang involvement, and incarceration, I have forged a path of redemption and purpose. My journey led me to find faith in Christ, a transformative experience that fueled my artistic passions and provided a framework for personal growth. While incarcerated, I developed my skills in various artistic mediums, including painting, drawing, hair styling, and writing. This culminated in the publication of my autobiography, “Down For Life,” which details my struggles and ultimate transformation.

Following my release from federal prison, I dedicated myself to helping others overcome similar challenges. I have worked extensively in the fields of substance abuse and mental health, offering support and guidance to those seeking recovery. My artistic talents continued to flourish, leading to the illustration of several children’s books and the creation of my own clothing line. As an ordained minister, I have returned to correctional facilities, sharing my story and offering spiritual guidance to hundreds of inmates. My published works have been distributed throughout Texas’s correctional institutions, aiming to reach individuals who may be more receptive to faith during periods of vulnerability.

My entrepreneurial spirit is also evident in my career as a licensed barber, a profession I began in 2008. While initially pursuing this path out of necessity, I have transformed it into a vocation that combines my artistic talents with my counseling skills to provide clients with an exceptional and caring experience. In essence, my life’s work reflects my identity as a Christian, father, artist, entrepreneur, counselor, author, barber, and philanthropist, each role contributing to my ongoing commitment to service and community betterment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My life journey has been, and continues to be, marked by significant challenges. This experience has reinforced my understanding that this earthly realm is not my ultimate destination. Despite these difficulties, I remain profoundly grateful for the numerous blessings in my life, exceeding any expectation I may have previously held. I am committed to viewing every experience, both positive and seemingly negative, as an opportunity for growth and learning.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My artistic journey has been a diverse and enriching experience, encompassing a wide range of disciplines from sculpting and oil painting portraits to barbering. My approach is grounded in the belief that mastering fundamental design principles provides a solid foundation for any artistic endeavor, regardless of the specific medium or tool. This philosophy permeates my work in all artistic fields, enabling me to envision the final product from the outset and incorporate nuanced details that reflect my unique artistic style.

I take immense pride in every aspect of my artistic practice, as I approach each project with passion and dedication. I believe my distinguishing characteristic lies in the profound love I possess, not only for my work itself, but also for the Christ centered principles and values that guide my life.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I truly believe that if you yield to God, He will place the right people in your path. However, life’s mentors may not seem as amiable as one might hope. Some of my greatest mentors have actually shown me what “not” to do.
What works well is the knowledge of the fact that my life is not haphazardly structured but meticulously defined. This removes the sting from what may seem to be an ominous, foreboding experience.
