Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiera Monae.
Hi Kiera, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After being diagnosed with alopecia in 2017, I wanted to find the best hair for protective styling to help minimize tension. After searching for extensions, I realized that quality extensions and customer service was scarce. I decided to start my own company ensuring quality products and great customer service. I launched Manes By Monae in 2018.
I initially got started by testing various vendors and doing market research of the hair industry. My next step was to enlist women that wore extensions to get honest reviews and user-generated content. Knowing the importance of social media, I had content shoots with models that embodied my target market. By word of mouth, referrals, and marketing my business continues to grow to where it is today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road of entrepreneurship is not smooth. There have been some bumps along the way. I’ve had a full-time job throughout the duration of MBM. One of my biggest struggles has been time management and balancing.
In 2017, I didn’t have much knowledge about the things it took to be a sustainable business (marketing, branding, sale strategy, raising capital, and scaling…etc.) and I have had to actively educate myself and seek help. By keeping my ego in check and acknowledging that I didn’t know it all has allowed my business to continue to grow throughout the years,
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m proud to say that I am the creative director for my brand. I learned early on that “Content is King.” I pride myself on high-quality images/videos and relevant content. From my photoshoots to the video shoots, I plan them both extensively. I’m very detailed oriented and intentional about what images are released from my brand.
