Life & Work with Krisette Cole of Dallas an Ellis County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krisette Cole.

Krisette , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak with you!

My story is a blend of a few worlds: motherhood, justice, and education. I am a Wife, Mother, Nurse (LVN & Certified Heath Science Instructor), Certified Childbirth Educator, Postpartum Doula, and Founder of Mosaic Cooperative Learning Center. I’ve been a homeschool mom for 17 years now—a journey that started long before the pandemic shifted the homeschooling landscape into what it is today. I’ve been married to my husband for 20 years, and together we’re raising six children. Three have already graduated and are thriving in college, and I still have three learning at home with me.

In 2012, our family relocated from Pennsylvania to Irving and eventually settled in Oak Cliff at Christ for the Nations. As we integrated into the local homeschool community, I began to notice significant gaps. Like many parents, I sought freedom, academic excellence, and a “village” for my children. But as I moved through these spaces, I found a recurring, painful theme: choice does not always equal belonging. > For a long time, I tried to convince myself that the discomfort I felt was just my own sensitivity as a recent Texas transplant—that I was being too prickly or didn’t understand DFW culture. We lived on a very diverse campus that represented so many cultures, creeds, and dialects; yet, when I stepped into the homeschool space, I would experience microaggressions or witness seemingly benign moments of exclusion. I tried to reason them away, but as I got to know other families in the community—whether they were racial minorities, families with accessibility challenges, or bilingual households—I realized that I was not alone.

There was a collective, simmering dissatisfaction that deepened the further we moved from Dallas, coming to a head once I entered Ellis County. Many of us felt that our children were being “othered” in the very spaces we had intentionally chosen for them to thrive. We had moved away from traditional systems only to find a lack of both inclusion and academic excellence in the cooperative environments available to us.

The moment my frustration turned toward action came during a period of national tragedy. Watching the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Sandra Bland was devastating—but what was even more painful was witnessing the absolute absence of empathy within the educational spaces we frequented. When I saw disgust and disdain instead of compassion for mothers who had lost their children, my heart burned.

I realized that anger alone wasn’t a solution. I reached back into the lessons my mother taught me about the Civil Rights Movement—lessons she lived through firsthand. I decided that if there wasn’t a seat for us at a table that valued justice, equity, and authentic community, I would build a new table.
That was the birth of Mosaic Cooperative Learning Commons.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. My first thoughts about creating a “third space” for alternative education—to truly educate my community—began more than ten years ago. Six years ago, I started putting pen to paper and flushing out the ideas. But it wasn’t until 2023 that I felt the freedom to move and take the steps to make Mosaic happen.

I also wanted to be sure that my priorities were in alignment with my calling to motherhood. It was vital to me that my family never felt like a second choice. Finally, I had to be sure that my motives were pure and my heart was ready. Through loss, tragedy, and many toils, we have certainly come. But the reality is that when God has something for you to accomplish—He means for you to do that thing. He illuminates your path, and when He does, the answer is always yes.

Once I knew that I was planted in God’s will, and not just acting on my own feelings, it became clear that there was no choice but to birth this vision. I am thankful to God for our amazing Board of Directors who have come alongside me. But not only them—I am grateful for the friends who prayed, confirmed, and labored with me. We are a small organization with an enormous mission. But because this was a word from the Lord, and we know that His words do not return void without accomplishing that which He set them out to do, I know we will impact many lives. Regardless of the struggles, it is all for His glory.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mosaic specializes in creating an intentionally inclusive and equitable framework for families who may have found themselves on the fringes of the traditional or alternative education experience—specifically for grades 6–12. This commitment to inclusion is exactly what sets us apart from other cooperative learning environments.
We are known for our modern, culturally relevant, whole-personhood approach to education. Our students are intrinsically valuable because they were created by our Father in heaven with an intentional design. At Mosaic, we recognize that our students are triune beings: spirit, mind, and body. Because of this, no child is ever treated as an afterthought in their own classroom.
But what truly distinguishes us is how we are committed to teaching our students the whole story. We teach honest, difficult subjects with sensitivity, support, and rigor, making sure that our students are taught to think critically and become empowered citizens who are equipped to lead with character and intention. We teach our students to see each other on purpose, honoring the God-sized design in each other.
We operate on a University Model Style approach. This structure balances:
High-intensity, in-person instruction: Expert-led days on campus that provide a clear academic roadmap.
Mentored “Satellite Days”: Home-based learning days that allow families to continue growing and learning together.
We are crafting a narrative where academic rigor and holistic wellness live under the same roof, ensuring that our students flourish not just as scholars, but as resilient, healthy human beings.
There are three ways to learn with us this fall:
The Scholar Track is our “all-in” academic program. It’s perfect for families who want the freedom of homeschooling but prefer a professional roadmap and expert teachers to handle the heavy lifting.
The Specialist Track is for established homeschooling families who already have a great rhythm at home but want a professional deep-dive into specific core areas. It’s perfect if you enjoy leading your child’s education but want an expert to take the reins for either STEM or Humanities.
Core Community: Homeschool Co-op. Best for families looking for social connection, the arts, and elective exploration without a mid-week teaching requirement. This is ideal for those seeking a “village” atmosphere.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
love that Dallas is reimagining itself. Where other cities in our nation are staying stagnant, there are beautiful pockets of well-intentioned people who are starting movements to serve their neighbors with love, excellence, and grace. If we can encourage, support, and fund these programs, I just know that anything is possible in the Metroplex.
